Gray Dwarves: Metal of Choice

Post by Glim » Wed Jun 14, 2006 5:28 am

I wished to ask two questions. If anyone has information concerning (FR wise) what metal duergar are known to work with, mithril or adamantium? It was my assumption that they worked more with the latter.

If this is true, I was curious to know if duergar smiths were coded to create/work with/forge adamantium. Or if they are coded to work with mithril, like other dwarves.

Any information is welcome,
Thank you,

I don't know about canon material, but here on FK Duergar seem to mine no differently to 'surface' dwarves.

Adamantium is the variant which Drow are able to obtain in the same way that Elves can obtain Elven, whereas Dwarves (including Duergar) and Humans obtain Titanium.

Oh, alright. Thank you :)

I was merely asking because I thought I read somewhere that much of the adamantium armor that drow get are from the duergar. Had thoughts about maybe eventually bringing some player-made adamantium down to the underdark. :)

That answers my second question, if anyone has any information concerning duergar and mithril/adamantium canon it would be a great help. :)

Thank you,

Speaking as a Drow i would be most displeased to see our special metal being used by any lesser race and would act accordingly. I believe we may purchase weapons and armour of steel from the grey Dwarfs for our slaves but the secret of Adamantine remains ours alone.

(The Dueragar city of Grackultstugh certainly trades weapons and armour with Menzo and other places according to the underdark sourcebook, it does not mention that they make adamantine, magic and high quality for sure but not explicitly Adamantine, but i could be wrong)

This comes from Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark (2nd Edition AD&D Sourcebook)
Although the Stout Folk abandoned Ammarindar in such haste that cartloads of treasure were left behind, much of the dwarven realm’s wealth was plundered by demons, drow, and beholders. Nevertheless, the Ammarindan Underdark still holds a great number of undiscovered secrets that date back nearly five hundred years. In particular, the dwarves of Ammarindar were known for their everbright adamantine armor. They fashioned suits of full plate worked into horns, ridges, barbs, and crests of a shining blue silver hue. As most of this armor and unworked adamant has gone unaccounted for, secret caches may still exist.
This is from the Demihuman Deities book (2nd Edition AD&D Sourcebook). The section this is from is talking about Laduguer, who is the patron god of the duergar/gray dwarves.
He demonstrates his favor through the discovery of adamant, black sapphires, bloodstones, diamonds, hizagkuur, mithral, and silver, but does not otherwise send omens to his priests.
So it looks like the dwarves who live in the Underdark do mine and forge Adamantine items, but they probably aren't as known as the drow equipment.
