Cloaks
This is something that I wondered about for years, even on the previous Mud that I played. I did a search to see if anything like this had been brought up on this forum, but came up empty handed, so I decided to run with it. If it has been mentioned, please just redirect me to that thread.
I think it would be very interesting if cloaks hid all of the wearers clothing underneath it. Of course there would be some clothing articles still obvious, like boots, gloves, light, held items and helmet (Unless the cloak had a cowl attached?).
It could add very well add a little more depth.
But to make this even better... you would fight VERY poorly while wearing this cloak. Perhaps by lowering hit/dam rolls and perhaps dexterity. In fact, I wouldn't think you could draw your weapons while wearing it either(Due to your sheath or scabbard being underneath the cloak). This way you would not keep the cloak on at all times; normally only when travelling or trying to keep a low key.
Can't you picture this: A man in a dark cloak walking through the bustling crowd of a city. He slips anonymously through the gates and goes into a building. The evil merchant sits at his desk, counting ill-gotten money. He looks up at the sound of someone walking in. "Who are you?", and is answered only with "...merely a messenger...", when the mysterious man rips off the dark cloak, and draws his sword from his scabbard then sends his message... medievil style

cloaks
I was wondering what people's thoughts on having cloaks be able to be closed. When closed, they would hide armour and clothes worn under them.

Refering to the thread,

Always good to check the search just incase someone already posted something about it. But hope that helps.

From a building's perspective, it might be possible, but it would generate some problems.
We could make it so that typeing "close" and "open" respectively closes and opens a cloak, that is, make it non-transparent or transparent.
But that would mean that commands like "close door" / "open door" / "close chest" / ... wouldn't be usable while using a cloak. So that's certainly not a perfect solution.
It might be possible to make this change at the hardcode level, but then we would need to add a new flag to let the code know if an item that is worn on the body can be closed or not. That would require us to go through all the areas and add the flag where needed (in addition to the modification in hard code).
So, the answer is: it's possible, but after comparing the amount of work needed with the benefit, I would say that it's not really a priority, even if the idea clearly can add new options to the roleplay.

How about builders just changing the type of cloak codewise??Dalvyn wrote:We could, but we would still need to add a wrap program and an unwrap program to each of the cloaks.
I know that statement is confusing, but.... it fixes the problem if I believe I can explain it
I know some OVER layer items cover underlayers codewise. Examples would be an elk hide gamash or mail coat of silver and brass.
So... is it possible to code cloaks in a similar way?? Obviously, this would not be wanted for ALL cloaks, but if a builder really wanted one... AFter an appropriate ADJ, and DESC.... it could easily make IC sense and create the object they desired...
Or... maybe not

A young male human looks at your claw, his eyes widen, "Wha-what is that on your claw?"
You look to the claw, stopping abruptly
You yell, "Git et off! Git et off!" and begin to hop up and down, shaking your hand,
voice turning to a girlish scream!

Well, I think the problem is that you don't want a cloak to cover the layers under it all the time. The idea of this thread is making the cloaks so they can switch between transparent and not transparent.
As you said, it would be possible to code a cloak so that it doesn't show what's under it, but it's not really the ideal solution to the problem.
