Religion and Race Enemy

Post by Saiden » Mon Dec 01, 2003 12:05 am

Some religions are ordered to hunt down certain races.

Moradin, orcs. Malar, elves. Etc, etc.

I was wondering if it would make sense to anyone else if the "Race Enemy" in your score would be filled with the particular race your religion hunts/kills automatically upon entering the religion.

Any comments?

I don't want to steal it...no that would be too easy...
I want them to give it to me willingly

racial enemy

No because Racial enemy is a special thing given to the rangers for their chosen enemies and for those that aquire the feat foe hunter it would strip that away. Plus I dont think it would be possible to code correct for religion based wars such as Bane/Torm or Shar/Selune.. and some also have more then one enemy such sa elves fighting orc and drow just as equally...

an interesting idea otherwise perhas it could for certain religions be a benefit but dont think over all would work

Setting race enemy to that of your religion's foes

Post by Ursan » Wed Dec 31, 2003 7:37 pm

I may be a little late on contributing here, my apologies.

My thoughts on this are that it wouldnt make sense for it to be automatic, for some of the reasons given above.....

...it would remove the element of choice for those who are rangers or take the related feat. Some rangers might wish a different race enemy, one that might reflect something from their background or a particular encounter in the game.

....the reverse is true of course, it would be unfair to allow someone (who has set their race enemy to something that doesnt help them in their new faith) to have the advantage that it is reset in their favour

...it would be a burden on the coding team to change it. Their time is better spent on other things, particularly since it works fine at the moment with players deciding it for themselves.

The only other point I would make, is that if you have the ability to select a race enemy and your faith has a certain race as a foe... then by all means select it yourself. Race-specific faiths are easier than the other pantheons of course, but if you think that most Cyricists are humans or most Druids are half-elves... then you can set it to the most suitable for your faith.
Remember, should you encounter an angry Dragon and your only company is a Halfling...
...you do not need to run faster than the Dragon, only the halfling.

It's a wolverine, not a skunk... sheesh

I'm also a bit late :)

I might just be stuck in AD&D (2nd edition, but AD&D sounds better) but race enemies were a ranger ability, where the ranger spends so much time studying and has a hatred for a certain foe or race, like bugbears, that they learn their weaknesses so they might kill them quicker. I can't see how this would translate automatically to a deity-specific war - all Sharites aren't the one race or class, so a Mystran wouldn't deserve a bonus +4 THAC0 when dealing with different Sharites.
