Can't learn turn undead

Post by Sirys » Thu Aug 30, 2007 3:02 am

Cheriana questioned this in the game a long time ago, and got IMM help on it.. they said to wait till she was faithed and had a holy symbol. Well, Cheriana is faithed to the morninglord. I know from an alt that a member in one of her temples teaches it. Why can't Cheriana see the training for turn undead. You'd think Lathander's priests if any would be able to learn to turn undead. Is this a bug or just her? I thought any priest could learn turn undead. Thank you for your response.

P.S. It's not in her skill list or spell list.. it IS in her abilities. Could it be race related as to why it's not in her skill or spell list?

The skill can be trained at the mob in question, however you can not learn what is not on your skill list. Therefore it would most likely take a quest or another PC to teach you such a skill so you have one point after which you can learn from that mob. Unless an Imm feels you should know it and gives you the skill.

I dont want to turn this into a large discussion but knowing with an alt shouldn't mean your other character will know.

This makes me a bit confused.

Why wouldn't she have it in her skill/spell list? Has it been removed from priests?

Just curious,

I dunno if this helps...

But I have a priest.. in fact Mariela who is a priestess of Selune who learned Turn Undead.

Soooo....I do not think it's been removed from the priests. If you don't see a mob that has Turn Undead maybe you are not the right level to learn it from that mob? I don't know but I've noticed as my character goes up in levels, sometimes mobs give me different things than they usedtacould.

Or it was possible that my mind's playing tricks and I just was hitting things during a rehash. I dunno. But maybe that will help.

Well, Cheriana is level 39, so I'm pretty sure she would be able to learn it. And as for an alt finding it.. This is in Cheriana's faith's temple, where she spends a lot of time, and frequently checks the NPC's to see if they have any new trainings.... so it doesn't matter that an alt found it, considering she can't see it on ANY of the NPC's I know that train it when she has tried training. Or at least USED to train it. I thought it might either be a bug or Cheriana is glitched in some way. But I'm pretty sure she should be able to learn it.

Turning the undead

Post by Skye » Mon Oct 15, 2007 7:33 am

Any answers on this? I'm not very high level yet, but I'd like to know for when I'm 'up there'...

As for me, Turn Undead is listed under 'abilities' but not under 'skills'. Under abilities it indicates I have 5/5 'charges'.

I understand that this is a 'skill' that I need to be trained in (like other skills), but what seems to be really confusing is that it's not /listed/ under skills. All the other trainable skills are (along with the level at which it can be learnt up to 'Scribe' @ lvl. 43)...

This may not be a bug, but it'd be awful nice to know what's going on and why 'turn undead' isn't listed as an 'unlearnt' skill along with all the others?

Thanks!

As far as I know this is a bug that has existed since the new spell system came into the game. Under the old spell system, turn undead was a spell. When the new system was installed, some things like shapechange and turn undead were made into use per day abilities and removed from skill lists. The problem is that when attempting to use any of those abilities, the game still checks to see if the skill is trained, so only people who had the spell trained before the new system was created (and thus, still have the skill appearing in their skill list) are able to use the ability.

It's unlikely that you would be able to train the skill even if you found a trainer that is able to teach it. You can only train skills that are on your list, and you can only see skills at trainers if they are on your list.

As this is a bug, it would require one of two resolutions. One resolution would be to remove the part where the game checks to see if you have the skill trained and simply let priests use the skill X number of times per day based on level. The other solution would be to put the skill back on priest skill lists so that they can train and use the ability.

I am seriously really behind on moving bugs to bugzilla guys and I really apologize. RL is getting in the way alot.

My suggestion would be Balek's latter. I feel that priests should learn it both as a trainable skill and gain uses as they level their character and the skill.

I don't have a priest PC so I don't feel in my league to figure out what should be done here; but if there's no objection to the suggested solution, put turning back on priestly skill lists, I can certainly Bugzilla that this week - I have a week of relative respite from work!

The skill 'turn undead' needs to be added, at level 1, not only to all the guilded cleric guilds (that part, I can do online if needed), but also to the base priest guild (that part, I cannot do online).

I cannot remember which priest guilds lack the skill but there are a few, Lathander being one. If you can update those online that would be helpful.

Done for the guilds.

But you will still need to bugzilla that it needs to be added to the base class.

Is there, by the way, already an evil trainer for the skill in place, since this is a universal ability for all clerics?

Also, I think I know the answer to this, but the turn command just turns/destroys them regardless of alignment, yes? Not that the chance to hold/charm them as an evil priest wouldn't be fun, but that would be WAY far down on the priority list over other things.

An evil priest would rebuke the undead which is the same as hold, not charm though.

What I wonder is if it could be possible that it affected more than one undead by use like in D&D.

Right! Thank you for being specific, because I just quoted you in doing so (this doesn't make 100% sense to me), but this is now Bugzilla'ed!

Triple of questions :)

1. Why should it be added to the base class?
2. Shouldn't only clerics of faith be able to do it?
3. Also, druid's cannot turn undead so wouldn't that be why it shouldn't be added to the base class?

Just me wondering.

I've noticed with Frankkin that when he uses turn undead, it echoes "The power of your faith has crashed down upon" whatever you tried to turn. I wish it WAS an AOE prayer.. that would really be fun!!! But you have to have FAITH to power it, which means FAVOR. That's how I'm reading that, anyway...not to mention, I think Lathanderites would get even MORE OOMPH to their turn dead abilities for obvious reasons, as should the followers of Kelemvor. They DO hate the undead..hehehe...maybe the abilities would refresh quicker if you're of those 2 faiths.. hmmm.. would be nice...but that is why I think it shouldn't be put into general clerical class.. you need the Favor to do it.. or change all the echoes... <shrugs>

You're absolutely RIGHT Glim! :)

If we added it to the base priest class, then druids would be able to learn it before they were guilded and keep it grandfathered in, so, therefore, you are right, putting it in the guild files is sufficient.

Good align priests can either turn, or if the score is high enough, destroy the undead.

Evil priests can either rebuke (similar to hold) or, if the score is high enough, command them (closest equivalent code-wise in FK would be to charm, because essentially the cleric is bringing them under his control.)
