Tacking a link to that thread on to here because there are ideas in there relevant to the discussion here. Ideas on specialist wizards and mages welcome!
Spell Power and Specialist Wizards
Re: Spell Power and Specialist Wizards
Would there be a possibility of a parallel set of "bonus feats" like those created for fighters being adopted for specialist wizards to narrow the gap between their average ECL and that of mages? Perhaps ones along the lines of: http://www.forgottenkingdoms.org//board ... =77&t=7922
Re: Spell Power and Specialist Wizards
Not sure if this is the place for it, but just thought I'd make a quick suggestion, nice and easy, for specialist wizards.
Speaking as a mage with no specialist wizard at all, I want to suggest the following:
1: In specialist's chosen school, they can reach GM at the spell (I think they already can) and (if it is possible) earn experience double as fast in that school.
2: In all other schools they are the same level of expertise at a mage.
3: All specialist wizards have two opposing skills
This way, it makes:
1: A specialist wizard's power at their school incredibly formidable
2: Makes them viable teachers, and average casters (like mages) at other spells
3: By removing two schools from them, mages retain their advantage at knowing every school.
As it is, mages outnumber specialists because the specialists reward (power) is not pronounced enough. Having thought quite a bit about specialist wizards, I think this makes them a tough decision to make (omg, never cast illusion again?!) but also a rewarding one (yes, so-and-so, you can summon the icy powers of magic, but I cannot help but laugh at your paltry efforts... I mastered such potent gifts years ago! Feel my wrath!).
What do people think? This isn't just a small issue. Its one that affects all specialist wizards, and all mages. If everyone is turning to magedom just because it offers more, we may as well either remove specialist wizards completely and make everyone a mage, or implement just a few tweaks to make specialist wizards just as viable.

If you have knowledge, let others light their candles with it.
