item / pronoun linking in smote
As we all know, the $ key in smote will link someone's name / shortdesc depending on whether someone has greeted the person reading the aforementioned smote, but what if the system were expanded slightly to allow:
$name
$itemkeyword
@name
&name
*name
So, this is to say, if someone were to output this line:
emote pulls out $feather, tickling $name1's feet as $name2 and $name3 hold @name1 down by &name1's arms, snickering as *name1 giggles
the mud would then return:
Name4 pulls out a small grey feather, tickling Name1's feet as Name2 and Name3 hold him down by his arms, snickering as he giggles.
Where $name/itemkey would work to output its short description, @/&/*name would output a gender-based him/her/it, his/hers/its, or he/she/it respectively.
It would clear up this discrepancy:
Name2 grins at you as he sees her smile.
I'm not sure how easy or difficult this would be on a C-sharp smaug codebase, or how much the players would want/try to adapt to it, but it seems solid, at least to me.

Re: item / pronoun linking in smote
I think the reason the $name exists is because people see them as different things. Someone may not know their name and only see the adjective, while another knows the name and smoting out the adjective is a pain in the ass.
This isn't the case with an object. Everyone sees a feather as a feather, so where "smote smiles at Jim" is inappropriate because some may not know him as Jim, "smote waves a feather" is appropriate because everyone sees the feather as a feather and understands what a feather is.

Re: item / pronoun linking in smote
Yes, but I'd rather be able to smote removes $helm, shaking out her hair
and get
Skeas removes a red steel open faced helm, shaking out her hair.
than
smote removes her helm, shaking out her hair
and get
Skeas removes her helm, shaking out her hair
It's true that it's not necessary for recognition, but I think that it would just generally be more fun and better looking.

Re: item / pronoun linking in smote
There are thousands upon thousands of items in game, what you can do, is send in ideas for item specific echoes to fkbuilders@lists.skynet.ie to be linked to some items. Generally its up to the builders themselves to decide if the echoes are needed. Some items have specific echoes built into them to add to the rp around the items already.
May you find the knowledge you seek. If you find something else, it is still knowledge, and as such, still a gain.
Re: item / pronoun linking in smote
I may be wrong, but I think it's possible to include colour coding in smotes, using the codes found in help feralcolour.
You could set up your own smotes using the appropriate colours for whichever items you please rather than rely on any specific coding.

Re: item / pronoun linking in smote
Colour only works on emotes. Smotes, the code doesn't work.
If you have knowledge, let others light their candles with it.

Re: item / pronoun linking in smote
that doesn't change the point
change "smote" to "emote" in her paragraph and it's the exact same thing.

Re: item / pronoun linking in smote
To clarify Oghma, I don't think the suggestion is to add an echo program to the thousands of items in the game. I think it is to change the code to allow reference to items within smote/emote similar to the way code references characters.

Re: item / pronoun linking in smote
Not exactly what I meant, I misunderstood the original intent and suggested something like adding an echo to a specific object that would occur when the object was triggered. There are hoods and cloaks that automatically do a smote when they are removed for example. In that respect, I considered the volume of items in the game and thought it would be impossible or too extensive to attach an echo for all items and instead I suggest some items of Skeas' choosing could be sent in to incorporate smote echoes. But I see now that is not the case (having reread the initial postings), the desire to incorporate objects into smotes. Its easily enough accomplished by combining two-three alias' together:
Alias name: helmo
type helmo:
emote removes {90}A bright red helm.&
remove helm
Though it would be nice to have the ability to put emotes around objects I don't know if it is possible.
Sorry for not being clear enough in my earlier post.

Re: item / pronoun linking in smote
It's possible on a basic Diku CircleMUD, [I used to play one that had this feature, that's where I stole the idea from.] As we're playing a C++ Smaug, I know nothing of our capabilities or limits, though I would assume them to be higher.

Re: item / pronoun linking in smote
I'd like to support the above idea by bumping this thread. I thought it was my own insanely clever and awesome idea, but clearly others thought of it first.
I'd also like to add that it would be nice if there were a 'show' command that would allow a character to see the long description of an item in my inventory. So if I typed:
show longsword lirith
...then Lirith would see the long description of my longsword, exactly as if she was holding it and had typed 'exa longsword'.

I'd be behind this.Anguin wrote:I'd also like to add that it would be nice if there were a 'show' command that would allow a character to see the long description of an item in my inventory. So if I typed:

And the item smoting option would be nice, too, for items.

Re: item / pronoun linking in smote
If it's a coding conflict with smote, maybe a new 'mote' can be added...
