Sneaking

Post by Grenwyn » Thu Jan 14, 2010 4:34 pm

Currently, it seems, the 'sneak' skill is not increased by moving around at speed 'sneak'. Thus the only way to increase it (other than training) is by typing 'sneak' repeatedly.

This doesn't seem logical to me. Is there a reason why this is so? I find it odd that my 'hide' skill is at adept, but 'sneak' is still at apprentice. :)

Moved to Bug Reporting. Needs looking into.

This is something I've always suspected was the case, but I'm not sure if it's a bug or intentional. Anyway, here's some results from the testport on the improvement rates of hide and sneak.

To raise a PC skill level in sneak from inept (trained once) up to journeyman, takes around double the number of attempts to raise hide to the same level.
So, it appears that the improvement rate of sneak is half that of hide. Bug or feature?

Also confirmed, sneak does not improve by sneaking around (same char on testport, sneaked from room to room, approx. 200 movements).

If we agree this should be looked at, I'll put it into bugzilla with some more details.

One of my PCs got a better in sneak the other day while sneaking. I think it improves...just really slowly. :D

I wonder if that's been changed very recently, because the PC I have that is halfway decent at sneak (expert), has never once had an improve by sneaking around.

I have some data on this one. Whether it is conclusive or not can be debated.
The conditions were as follows:
PC was inept level 1 at sneak.
Second, observing PC was not known at listen.
All moves were made in a looping room so every movement equaled 2 sneak attempts (one exiting, one re-entering)
A counted success rate from 82 movements (164 attempts) yielded a success rate of 47.35% (76 successful sneak attempts)
A second counted success rate from 50 movements (100 attempts) yielded a 44% success rate (44 successful sneak attempts)
A total of 250 movements were made (500 attempts)

Being conservative and rounding the two success rates down to 40% yields 200 successful sneaks of 500. These were in best conditions in front of a PC. Not a single advance in all those attempts was observed. The sneaking PC also made several hundred sneak attempts earlier, that were not counted, so 200 successes is low. Considering the PC was inept 1 at sneak and hadn't gone up once in over 200 successes, and then considering the scale of improvement is exponential, I would say the rate of improvement, if any, is likely way too high.

This is assuming advancement is based off of successful sneaks and not total.

Hope that helps.

Moving to unconfirmed for now. I looked at sneak and it is coded to increase slower than most things. If this becomes too much and an issue, it might be something to mention in the suggestions forum to increase the skill-up rate for it.
