Speed setting commands

Post by Nysan » Tue Sep 21, 2010 12:42 am

I don't think this is a bug, but a lack of understanding of speed code on my part. Could someone tell me why fly/soar resets to swim in certain waterways?

----

<100%hp 94m 50%mv> Usage: speed [fly][soar]
Your speed set to soar.

<100%hp 94m 50%mv> Plains

<100%hp 94m 49%mv> Water
*edit again*

<100%hp 94m 48%mv> Usage: speed [swim]
Your speed set to swim.

Drowning while on a flying mount

Post by Andreas » Tue Sep 21, 2010 4:19 am

I was in Silverymoon and I decided to fly out over the river from the docks. I started moving through those rooms and suddenly noticed my character was taking damage from drowning! I was mounted on a white griffon at the time and set to speed soar. I left Silverymoon and tested this drowning while flying over some of the rivers and it happened again.

Before my extended hiatus from here, I was able to fly over any body of water while mounted on the griffon and not drown.

Bug report: Fly of all variations including flying mounts

Post by Tyeslan » Tue Sep 21, 2010 4:25 am

I'm posting this after a mishap with my aasimar and then someone having a mishap with their tiefling, both with winged feats. Andreas also had a problem with his flying mount.

While flying over land then into water with the affect stating flying indefinitely it reverts to swim and you start to choke if you don't have the swim skill or water breathing.

Tempus, at least I believe it was him, maybe another Imm had me test out air walk, ethereal flyer, wind walk, and levitate. The only spell out of all of these when going over water that wasn't affect was levitate. Levitate did not revert you to swimming and make you choke.

Andreas took his flying mount, probably a griffon as per ask channel, over water and started to drown while mounted on the back of him.

I think it might be either some sort of side effect from the new code updates or an intentional addition to keep PC's from flying over sea/ocean instead of using the ships. I noticed the same thing near Maos today.

I haven't tested any other bodies of water yet, but I'm assuming that the code is now going to force your PC into speed swim for any room that is sectored as being water.

Merged these all together over here in bug reporting.

I suspect it is a bug and not intentional because levitate works fine over water. When I mstat a player showing "affected by: levitate" all is good; when the same player is "affected by: flying" he drowns.

Good catch, Lathander. Moving to confirmed bugs.

Not sure if it matters, but I was not under the effects of a flying spell. I was polymorphed into a race with soar and fly as standard speeds. Not sure if polymorph forms are too IC. I'll PM anyone the race I was using, if needed.

Now with the flying thing, with it being fixed to go over water, should we be losing stamina at the rate it is right now?

Mine is showing at least -5% per each move over water. I flew around for a bit to keep watching it, and stamina emptied. I had to stop and meditate to regain it all.

I tried this out last night with a griffon and did not drown. I wasn't really paying attention to the griffon's stamina though.

Please keep reporting as you notice issues with this and we will try to pin down issues. Thanks.

Seems to be fixed, polymorphed form speed (fly/soar) remained constant in water or land, does not shift to swim upon entering water rooms.

A small side question, is soar coded as flying's version of run and thats why it drains more MV points?

I'm still seeing drowning/swim echoes while moving at soar speed on a griffon. I tested this in a few rivers around Waterdeep.

As for movement speed, travelling over water seems to consistently take 1% stamina from the mount (in this case a griffon from Waterdeep stables). Travelling over land at the same speed uses approx. 1% per 3 squares movement.

I've noticed the same type of thing on my Centaur. Especially flying around some areas (Mountains, I think?). Normally my Centaur has plenty of Stamina (probably in case someone is riding him), but lately he can't go too far.

I just recently witnessed this myself. This is a summary of what I'm seeing:

- Speed at soar when traveling in the wilderness but when flying over a river, getting swim/drowning echoes (as noted above from other players)

- Speed being set to walk while using air walk/fly/flying mounts while in indoor rooms (this seems plausible)

- Grounded mobs are now attacking even while the PC is flying. I just flew over two trolls and a hill giant on my hippogriff and all three of them attacked me. I was hoping I could find a snake as a perfect example of this being a bug.

- Stamina levels are reducing MUCH faster while flying. Air walking from Waterdeep to Berdusk now nearly drains all of my dwarf's stamina.

My guess is that the fly effect (both from spells and from mounts) is not being treated as flying. The only thing that seems to be working properly is the speed you move; everything else treats as though the character was on the ground.

I'll Bugzilla when I get home from class.

I mentioned it because my flying/soaring polymorphed character was losing 2-5% moving in waterways while before he was losing 1-3%. I can appreciate increased drain for ground movement speeds, like walk and run, but I never expected fly/soar to be hit so hard with the change.

Swimming while flying?

Post by Brodnur » Mon Oct 11, 2010 8:35 am

I've noticed the last couple times I've been able to log, that while flying on one of my chars griffon over different bodies of water, she's had to use water breathing. I've been told that that's inthe works to be fixed, but I happen to notice just a little bit ago, that, while using the waterbreathing prayer, she doesn't drown, but she does lose stamina as if she were swimming, also, she gains levels in the swim skill, the same as if she were swimming, rather than flying on griffon-back. I've tried this on several bodies of water, from rivers, to large oceans, and all seem to have the same result.

My bugzilla report for it is still open - e.g. it still hasn't been solved. Here is what I have noted as what is currently occuring:

Code: Select all

Actual Results:
- Flying over an ocean/water tile is causing the PC to make swim checks to avoid drowning and speed is being set to swim.
- Grounded aggressive mobs are initiating (and succeeding) combat against flying PCs.
- Stamina decays much faster while flying than before - affected by terrain.
Note: these are not what should be happening; just what we are currently experiencing.

I am having a tough time replicating this on the test port. Even on live, it only seems to affect certain PCs of mine, and not all of them. I feel that the 'fly' affect is not properly working, but I think there is something else in play.

There should be no out-standing issues with flying. Flying with the use of a fly spell over any terrain should cost roughly the same as walking on the easiest terrain, ie, roads in wilderness or city outside of wilderness. Flying with wings should cost roughly double what flying magically does.
