Luck

Post by Theleus » Thu Oct 07, 2010 8:56 pm

Any chance luck could be added to scoresheets or viewed with another command? Luck can't be raised like other skills, so it would be nice to see just how much various items affect luck Thanks.

As I know it, luck was intentionally left out of the score sheet. I think your query would be best requested to know how much an item affects your luck via identify, not your score changes.

It brings up another subject, really. I'd like items to be only as useful as their base item until identified. Like, for instance, if you get a new adamantite breastplate that's full plate. If you detect magic, you can see it's magical, but you get no other benefit from wearing it aside from it being a regular piece of full plate and giving the appropriate damage reduction for material. However, when it's identified, you see that it gives +2 to AC. But, I guess that's a subject for another day.

The problem being that identify says there's a bonus to luck, but not how much, or which items to ow do not stack together

Trust me, I'm aware.

Like I said, I'd suggest asking for that to be changed.

Well, either luck needs to be somehow viewable, or as you suggested, identify needs to tell us the level of luck bonus. Either would make me happy.

It is not just item enchants that impact luck, 'ill fortune' and 'good fortune' are the spells for that particular stat and as things currently stand, you cannot see any information on the spells besides duration in 'affect'. Granted, these are limited access spells but its still true.

I dunno. Still, I don't feel that luck should be a visible stat. I'm not really certain how much it affects your luck (positive OR negative) should be visible to a player. *shrug* Even so, not my call. Just voicing my opinion on it. :)

I honestly don't care either way, merely pointing out it has more than items impacting its levels. Nysan is old and dusty, but he casts fortune spells.

I don't mind not knowing how lucky I am. Fate is a mystery and unless we are under the direct influence of a spell or curse, we can only do so much to affect it. We use trinkets and tokens to ward off the bad, spells to increase the good and so forth. We don't know what will happen we only know that it can get better, or it can get worse. That's ideal from my standpoint.

Yeah, but if you are wearing a dozen such trinkets all with the same bonus to luck, and one with a different bonus to luck, then you only really gain from wearing 2 of the pieces, so just being able to use identify to figure out whats right to wear and what's just clutter can be a huge help. I mean, we can check score with the other stats to figure out which effects stack and which don't, so what's wrong with using identify to discern which luck bonus are likely to stack and which are not?

It really depends what motivates you. If you want the best stats all the time for the best results at various skills and situations, then it would be good to see all instances in your score. If you are willing to sacrifice function in the name of form and just go by what the world yields to you and what suits you that is fine too. I really don't need to know which hat is more lucky or what bauble is better for which situation in response to luck. Its completely up to chance. Even with the unknown I can experiment and try my best to reveal which is best. and then use that to my advantage. Its what I can do as a player and character. I have in real life a few sets of lucky socks, certain sets of them are luckier than the others and I am usually the judge of that.

That being said, having the ability to identify which pair of socks is luckier than the other, defeats the purpose of mystery, I don't mind being able to check my stats for everything else, but luck I still think is better off being a mystery. Its better not to know how bad things are right off or how good.

Same here! My luckiest socks are the ones that just got out of the dryer. Feels nice to have warm socks on the feet. :D

I'd just rather that enchanted items be consistent with the score sheet and actually show how great/little they affect you. Most - if not all - still use adjectives and some do not reveal anything at all when identified nor do they reflect anything in affects or score, and a lot of them that have permanent protections in regards to damage reduction or resistance will be revealed with identify, but are, again, adjectives and are not reflected in affects.

I also do not understand why enchantments only stack if they vary in power. You can achieve the same effect of four +1 attribute items with an apprenticed buff spell like "Trollish Vigor" or "Mnemonic Enhancer".

Not being able to see Luck doesn't bother me at all, but doing a 1-2 hour long quest and then being rewarded with an item that there is no possible way to know what it does is just plain annoying.

EDIT: Enchanted gems too, got to show some love to the enchanted gems, not a single one of them IG at the moment can be identified.

That's how it works in DnD, plain and simple.

And yes, Stat enhancement spell gives you a base +4, but they can be dispel and will run out while items bonuses stays active all the time.

Yep, I just did a little flip through my PHB and that is indeed correct, not only that but mundane items that give the same "type" of bonus as an enchanted item do not stack (i.e. a piece of armor with an armor bonus does not stack with the armor spell), so only the best one of the two is calculated into the equation.

And frankly, that just sucks.

The Lucklyvia did, though even his was never above average.

I had one character that was very lucky, but I never played them. Otherwise, I assumed that when I was luckier (under the influence of prayers of luck) I was
better at what I was doing than average.

Yeah, I have a Halfling thief that's got really high luck. I RPed it as well until a giant clod of mud appeared from the sky and squashed the smallest creature with the highest combination of luck and dexterity in the entire Square.

RP your luck if you think you can, but don't expect others to treat you as lucky based on it. :D
