War?
War?
This is just a idea and not sure where it belonged but I wished to ask, is it possible to set up a war in FK? Give the Tempurians a REAL chance to shine, plus make it against orcs or something, I mean it's just a thought, any other ideas why or why not this should be done would be nice, thanks Yall.

I have an idea on that. Very detailed. May need some help when I'm ready. Not sure when that will be.

I may not be around to see it due to...military issues, if you need any thoughts I'm full of ideas. Just ask but I have no clue how to do code or anything like that

Re: War?
I'd be willing to assist in this sort of role play when you need
Re: War?
Sounds like a good idea. I've read a bit of FR fiction over the years, and Waterdeep is often the target of besieging armies. Trick with attacks and raids, is how do you keep the challenge for High Level PCs, and keep Low Level PCs alive? Set mob boundries, maybe? No orcs or hobgoblins past the main gate, but have kobolds and goblins popping out of the sewers. I don't know. I'm not a builder or something like that. Had experience with a MUD that had such things. Low levels where kept indoors to keep them safe.
Re: War?
That would work, setting up the boundries, in order to set up the day of the attack/war, we could have a messanger run in scared to death and injured, or perhaps have a orc leader walk toward the gates and yell the challange that if something isn't done then they will attack

Re: War?
just a thought on this one. Why not have goblins pour out of howling peaks and leave the lower pc's to protect waterdeep and the higher level pc's enter the caves to stop the surging hordes. Maybe some kind of drow force leading them from the inside. This way you could possibly involve any drow characters as well.
Just a thought.

Re: War?
Just to make sure everyone's on the same page here, but Tempus faith is not always going to agree to specific wars. There'd be no Archbishop of Tempus ordering all the different churches to instruct their members to create individual battalions to be used for the sole purpose of fighting a specific adversary. In fact, even in FK, members of the Church of Tempus were poised to fight on opposing sides of a war.
Not trying to rain on any parades, here, I just want to make sure people know they do not need to go against their character's personal views and allow themselves be engaged in a fight they don't believe in.

Re: War?
Just a little background on my side of things. First, don't get too excited too fast, this is not a high priority for me yet. However, I've done a lot of work on trying to make a war fun. It's not as easy as you might think in our MUD setting. I'm not really talking about the kind of war where 20 or 30 goblins run into a room and attack a group of adventurers using our combat code. My work has been more along the lines of finding and modifying a basic, mass battle system where our players can assume the role of Generals and unit commanders. Others might be attached to specific units as part of the unit, but would then just be involved from an observation standpoint. Oh, did I mention BASIC? Yeah, basic. All of you uber-experienced mass combat game junkies can glue your suggestions to the nearest figurine and flush it down the toilet! (Tongue firmly in cheek). I have modified a somewhat basic system and think it might eventually work. Once I get it where I want it, I'll post asking for some play testers of the system. I'll likely do that through rping some PC generals leading specific unit types through military maneuvers. Oh, did I mention that it's not a high priority yet?
Here are some ROUGH RPs from the past that stemmed from my trying to lay ground work for a war (or at least some large-scale battles), just to whet some appetites:
1. Anyone remember that super powerful entity from the north who could, and would, occasionally possess people?
2. Selveem might not recall that particular version of his personality, but might recall another aspect where he appeared as a red robed mage and slew a bunch of Tempurians guarding a caravan carrying iron ore. Now what would anyone want with all that iron?
3. Some evils might remember him as someone who offered to pay for legions of skeletons. He showed up once to collect, opened a gate and marched the skeletons through it. Hmmm, wonder why he wanted all of them?
4. There was a Lathanderite rp once that involved dealing with some giants, a disease delivered via infected sheep and some overaggressive NPC adventurers that eventually resulted in the deaths of a rather peaceful clan of hill giants. Wonder what the other clans thought of that?
5. Another Lathanderite rp had the faithful trying to locate a reclusive, retired general. They went and learned a lot from the general's former steed, a gold dragon living alone on an island. Though they never found the general, could he fit into the mix somehow? Hmmm?
6. Even those who aren't generals or commanders can be involved in a war rp. Before a faction can go to war, it needs to form an army. Troops and gear cost money! Some large cities have standing armies, will anyone seek to rally the smaller villages to form a unit? Will those dwarves and elves help the humans? Sounds like a job for an ambassador. What form of incentive or fear will be needed to get the orcs to work with the Zhents.
7. Not all wars have only two sides.
OK, nuff for now. Back to tabling this idea for another couple of years.

Re: War?
Wasn't trying to filibuster the idea, just the notion that all Tempurians are of one mind and sword. <3
It's a good idea. I've enjoyed wars in the past, it'd be nice to see another. I know certain characters who go out of their way to pay (or otherwise ensure the fidelity of) NPCs and even PCs for pledges of allegiances. It'd be nice to see them finally cash in their chips and use them to create a faction involved.

Re: War?
I'd love to see something come of this, Lathander's teasing has got me all excited at the possibilities! Just throwing in my support, I'm too new to come up with any compelling suggestions.
Re: War?
I suppose if this was ever to happen it would have to be put into the context of DnD.
Yes a war could take place, yes it could be roleplayed
But the pcs couldnt really take part in overall battle control
Some pcs would most probably be best suited to recce, that sort
Of thing while others could be involved in strategic decisions from
A campaign map.
It would probably take a fair few people behind the scenes to
Maintain something like that though.

Re: War?
upon reflection it's probably better if war was to take place as a timeline event just to have
it as a hook for adventures to take place
it as a hook for adventures to take place
Re: War?
For argument's sake, it really oughtn't be difficult for the players to get involved at multiple levels of such conflict. A lowbie such as my character might use the war to really focus on what was important to him and where his loyalties might lie, protecting refugees as the escape the battlefield or whatnot. Whereas another character such as say..the civilar of the city watch could without question organize a militia comprised of guards and volunteers at the commander-level.
Not everyone is an aloof loner unaffiliated with the powers that be, and even those characters with no direct involvement in the war can use it as a catalyst for their own machinations.

I agree. I think Keller would be a good arch enemy! I mean, his name even reminds me of the Blue Alley!Keller wrote:For argument's sake, it really oughtn't be difficult for the players to get involved at multiple levels of such conflict.

Regardless, sounds fun!
Re: War?
That's the part I'm still working on. I think it can be done. Maybe I should just create a new forum area, invite some helpers and post what I have so far.But the pcs couldnt really take part in overall battle control

Re: War?
I have a system I envisioned for use on a Mud that focused heavily on siege-warfare, but it requires heavy code-support that is well beyond my abilities. Not as active as I used to be, but I'll gladly participate in the brainstorming.
Re: War?
Ah right yeah that sounds good, it really depends what kind of battle you envision as I can some types being easier than others.Lathander wrote:That's the part I'm still working on. I think it can be done. Maybe I should just create a new forum area, invite some helpers and post what I have so far
You might try a figurine approach to it all, a mob named "A unit of spearmen" which accounts for a certain number of men and suchlike
