Hello Everyone,
Greetings from a newbie. First off I want to let everyone know that I am blind and I use a client called VIP mud. I have been blind a little over nine years. I lost my eyesight from complications with my diabetes. I am also a single father. My son is eight years old and going into the third grade this coming school year. I live in south west Ohio. I am finding things a bit difficult to say the least. I am a lvl10 Moon elven warrior for now. The problem is I never really see anyone in Waterdeep when I am around to ask questions of. I have tried doing a bit of exploration outside the city but it gets a little frustrating to have to sleep to regain move every few steps, or so it seems. Also, in another thread I saw mention the Waterdeep school of combat. Is that the place with all the dummies? I am actually hoping to become a ranger. So does anyone have any tips for a newbie?

I understand how you feel. Even though I started here 11 years ago, I still distinctly remember many of the difficulties I had in transitioning from primarily ROMs to FK.
The most important thing is that you don't get too frustrated; if there's something you desperately need help with, please use our ASK command.
With regards to meeting people, success can vary greatly depending on your online hours. I know the Market Square is often the place where people meet up to talk; sometimes RP, too!

Hello and thanks for the welcome. Where can a level 10 warrior do some training while waiting on becoming a ranger? I very rarely see anyone in game to ask IC. The people I usually do see don't remember where to level at at the early levels.

There are some in-game hints in the Waterdeep Newspaper aimed at beginning players. Giving out this sort of IC information OOC is something we try to avoid. If you have exhausted the suggestions in the newspaper, please PM me. You do play in an unusual time window!

I have been trying to think of what oto say for the last several days. I am within a hair of leaving. I have been trying to become a ranger. The underlying current I am getting from the others is that if I don't tow the line and play how they say, I wont get any help from the other rangers. This is not the best way to get players to stick around. Especially ones like me who are obviously new. I actually got lectured about being in the city. The problem is I have no clue what else to do, but to go to the city to run errands for express deliveries. I have no clue where else to train but in the Waterdeep sewers. Yet, I get lectured about being in the city. I here all this talk about adventuring in groups, yet I am not suppose to go into the cities to meet other characters around my level to try and rp and group with. I was told that rangers are one of the hardest classes to play. What I have found is that it is not the class, but the way others say that the class has to be played. I am getting frustrated to the point of deleting and giving up. Sorry for the rant.

Being one of the rangers that you've been calling out in your post, I'm here to offer a bit of advice to a new player.
Rangers are not an easy class to play due to the following reasons(and the following are generalizations of the general population of rangers; not every ranger is exactly the same in all of his or her tenets)
Majority of rangers are not banned from entrance into a city, however:
A ranger is a man of the wilderness. The wilds. The outdoors, whether it's a forest or mountainside or a hermit in a cave or a stout defender of a small hamlet. Rangers are self-sufficient people who rarely rely on visits into a city to resupply.
I understand that being a new player and needing an introduction into FK is difficult for rangers, as we do not generally enter a city. However, being a new player, the best introduction to the game is via Waterdeep, where you can complete Express Deliveries quests (as you've stated) and also meet up with a number of other characters in almost all time slots at the Market Square.
You will find that almost any ranger would be happy to help you onto the path that you've chosen for your warrior. However, some of us are stricter and more classical rangers than others, and are known for their harsh methods of training.
A good thing to keep in mind is that everything handled IC (in character) is something our characters are deciding, not the players behind them. OOC (out of character) I would be more than happy to help you with any questions or to continue you onto the path of both a new player and a new ranger character. You could also try posting an in-game message (possibly with some OOC contact times) on the message board in Waterdeep. Players usually check those and a helpful ranger might contact you.

Hang tough! There are always going to be people in any role playing environment that know very little yet try to impose their littleness upon you. Just ignore them.
For example, I was lectured long, long ago (by a staff member no less) for not playing my Invoker wizard correctly because I was not basing my main spell usage and goals towards fire spells. They even used the OOC game wide channel to take a "poll" to further justify their ridiculousness. Obviously, the person knew nothing about wizards and invokers and I just ignored them and played how I wanted to play. I have been lectured about using a bad name for an Elf, choosing a faith not suited for Elves, not using actual Elf words in my speech.. .oh the list can go on and on.
My point is this: Don't let anyone annoy you too much, it is just a game.
Rangers might embody the self reliance and wilderness-man image that we all know so well, but it is not reasonable for a new player and or character to fully take up that role as they don't have the game knowledge, the class skills, class abilities nor the established network to fully role play as a Ranger would. Most experienced players know this, or should at any rate.
Let your character grow slowly and just play to your desired role as best you can and have fun with it. As you learn about the game you will be able to do more and find more places to take part in your character's story. Mostly, you will learn about the game from other people and you will find most of your early contacts inside the city of Waterdeep. Eventually you will be teaching others what you have learned.
So hang tough, eventually you will get to where you want to be. The early part of the game experience is the most tedious but after you reach that magical point, it all just starts to get easier... like a snowball that finally has built up enough mass to start rolling down hill on its own weight.
