Scrolls not copying

I had a new player come onto the ask channel and start telling me that the scrolls were not copying into his spellbook.

Glenduil asks you 'I am holding my spellbook in one hand and the scroll in the other'

He was at this point working with levitate. He is a lvl 9 wizard still in the temple. As we continued to work through all of this, i told him to put his spellbook in his inventory and try it again. He said he typed "write spellname" as his syntax. At lvl 9 he is capable of casting lvl 2 spells, levitate is a lvl 2 spell, and being a wizard, there are not guilds out of play for him. So I honestly have no idea what went wrong or why he could not get it to work. At one point he told me he was very new to this game which is why I am posting for him. Hope this is enough info for you, if not someone is going to have to catch him while he is logged on.

Thanks for the report! I actually did manage to catch up with him, and the problem is that he can't learn any level 2 spells, period, be it by TRAIN, TEACH, or WRITE! I can reproduce this with any level unguilded wizard on the testport. The question is, should that be the case? Are wizards like Clerics, in that they can't learn any level 2 spells until they guild? If so, the helpfiles need a buff to clarify that. If not, we have a hard code bug. I'm not enough of a wizzie-o-phile to know the answer off the top of my head with certainty - does someone else know that?

Correct, wizards are like cleric and can't learn any spells above level 1 until they guild. Not a bug.

Ahh, well there is my confusion then. I was under the impression that a wizard could train up to level three spells without being guilded. Thanks you two for the info!

Though there have been several suggestions made otherwise. They used to be able to cast higher than level 1 spells, if I'm not mistaken. Level three was where they hit their roadblock, but since level 0s have been in, that's not the case. Level zero spells have no offensive capability. I've acid splashed a rat and it giggled at me.

It's been this way since Lirith was created, so it wasn't a change when the level 0 spells were introduced. What changed then was that specialists could no longer use level 1 spells in a barred school.

I should have been clearer. Unfaithed clerics can learn some prayers above level 1 (I think up to level 4?), but it is not the full list that becomes available after faithing.

Aha! Yes, quite right, thank you! The highest level spell they can gain is raise dead, at level 5.

I updated the helpfile further to correct this. Thanks!
