Forum Troubles

Post by Lisira » Sat Feb 25, 2012 11:39 pm

Whenever I try to post to some boards (namely, Game Suggestions; I haven't tried spamming test posts on the others), I receive a server error upon pressing "Submit," and my posts won't go through. This is consistent and persistent behaviour that's been going on for two or three days now (it started about four hours after whenever my last post to GS was). Other boards (e.g. Off-Topic Discussion) are letting me post regularly, so I'm not sure what the problem could be.

Note: It's letting me edit posts I've already got on that board, it's just not letting me post new threads or even replies to other threads.

EDIT: Here, specifically, is what I'm receiving:

Code: Select all

The website encountered an error while retrieving http://www.forgottenkingdoms.org/board/posting.php?mode=reply&f=77&t=12992. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.

HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfil the request.

Hi there! I've had something similar like this happen before. Are you writing directly in these little text boxes? I sometimes like to write on a word program and then copy and paste it, but the site doesn't always appreciate that. That's my only guess though. =)

Nearraba is right about the forum really hating Word. If you want to draft something before you copy it into the forum post, then always use Notepad instead. That doesn't have the same hidden characters that Word does.

It's not that; I write all of my posts in the inline editor. The forum just really doesn't want me making any more Game Suggestions.

Well, yes, it is possible that the forum hates you. Also, this forum system is very finicky about anything pasted from the outside (as Lirith and Nearraba mentioned) and many diacritical or punctuation marks. So, if you are not copying and pasting into the window from the outside, then it's possible that the forum simply dislikes your brand of ' or , or whatever else.

I experienced a similar issue. I noticed that whenever I use an apostrophe, my posts will not go through. I have now become Data and no longer contractions.

This is generally reserved as a server-side issue. What operating system are you running? What browser?

Ubuntu Oneiric, and Google Chrome.
Ironically, I haven't had the problem since posting this thread. And I've been using apostrophes :o I think the forum really did just take a disliking to me. XD

If this happens to you again, try clicking the "Delete All Board Cookies" link at the bottom of the page. Be prepared to log into your account again, though. If the problem recurs and this fixes it, please say so here, for the sake of others!

The forum will accept the simple ' and " characters, but not the fancy open and closed ones that Word automatically turns them into. I hate that and have turned off that "feature" in Word, but most people have it on, and it will cause the forum to simply ignore your efforts to post something with any such non-ASCII characters in it. It won't return an error message, though.
