Entangle spell not acting as ranged nor as area

Post by Zorinar » Sat Apr 28, 2012 8:13 pm

Entangle is listed as the following in our helpfiles:

Transmutation
Range: Ranged Area
Target: Noncombat

However, when I try to cast this without a target it only goes after the current single mob I am targetting, even if I am fighting a group.

Second, when I try to cast this spell in a direction, I get a fail.
Seek ye victory? Ye shall eventually find defeat.
Seek ye defeat? Ye shall most certainly find it.
Seek ye nothing? Then all ye can find is victory.

The entangle spell is currently missing an "area" flag. That seems to fix things up save that a save causes a "You were unable to find any valid targets for your 'entangle' spell." echo.

Canon has this as ranged, so I will set it as such for now, and see how that goes.

I tried entangle again today just to see if it is working for me after the changes.

It still is not acting as an area spell.
The mud is asking for a "target" when I type "c entangle."

Also trying to cast it as range with no target I get:
Sun flower seeds glows briefly.
A slim reed glows briefly.
You failed.

However, range single target castings do work now.

It does work when I cast it at a direct target in the same room however, it has never actually 'entanged' anything I have ever tried it on, including very small and very weak things. I am not sure if it is because I am only apprentice with it, or that the spell is really hard to get to stick, or the spell is not working, but I thought I would mention it.

Thanks.

Actually, in my testing, the spell works at range, with or without a target, and does entangle things that fail a reflex save. But if every target saves, it gives the echo
You were unable to find any valid targets for your 'entangle' spell.

That does seem to be a bug.

I tried updating the helpfile to clarify...but will also ask others to reply here if they have had any trouble with this spell.

This echo actually isn't exclusive to entangle; For example, cast a Ranged Area spell such as chain lightning against m1708. If neither is affected, it gives the message that "You were unable to find any valid targets for your 'chain lightning' spell."

Code: Select all

You begin to chant.
A piece of fine silver wire glows briefly.
Some fur glows briefly.
A crystal rod glows briefly.
a drow invader seems to shake off the affects of the lightning.
a drow invader seems to shake off the affects of the lightning.
You were unable to find any valid targets for your 'chain lightning' spell.
This holds true of all or a lot of spells. Fireball, cone of cold, etc.
What are you talking about? What, that guy?
That was like that when I got here.

Ah, good! So, in a nutshell, we have:

Observed:
Ranged spells return the echo
You were unable to find any valid targets for your 'XXX' spell.
when in fact they find valid target(s), but all the targets save against the spell.

Expected: A different echo, like
None of your targets succumbed to your 'XXX' spell.
is returned when they all make their saves or are otherwise unaffected.

Yes?
