Field of Triumph
The buildings on either side of the street abruptly give way to an open, grassy
field. A broad path of packed dirt runs around its edge. In the center, a square
perhaps a hundred and fifty yards wide has been marked out by short stakes with
ropes strung between them. Wooden benches are set along the east and west sides
of the square; in the center of the east side, one section sits on an elevated
platform, covered with a canopy. The crescent-and-mountains standard of
Waterdeep flies at one side of the platform, while a black banner with nine
silver stars is displayed at the opposite side. The facade of a whitewashed
limestone building stands on a piece of higher ground immediately to the north.
A stone stairway
On the northern edge of the Field of Triumph, the ground slopes upward to form a
wide, squat hill, almost a miniature plateau. A limestone wall, almost devoid of
windows, surrounds the hilltop. There is a gate directly facing the Field,
flanked by two small U-shaped towers. The only way to approach to the gate is an
earthen ramp that bulges out to form a somewhat gentler slope than the hillside.
Stone slabs have been set into the ramp, making a stairway wide enough for two
or three to walk up it abreast.
Entrance to the Waterdeep School of Combat
Here a solid oak door is set into the wall. It is wide open, but two young
guards stand in front of it. Each wears a simple black jerkin, decorated only
with a single silver star on the left shoulder, and carries an antiquated kind
of halberd. A middle-aged man stands nearby, wearing a uniform of similar cut,
but with silver embellishments added to the black cloth. The towers on either
side fly a pennant with a circle of nine silver stars on a black field. A few
more guards are just visible atop each tower.
The recruiter for the Waterdeep School of Combat is here by the entrance.
He is a robust man with a dark brown beard, wearing a black doublet with
silver-slashed sleeves. On his shoulder is a badge with six silver stars.
Combat training area
The gate opens onto a yard of hard-packed dirt, with patches of short, sparse
grass here and there. In the western half of the yard, crudely cut wooden posts
stand upright in the ground in regular rows, with generous spaces between them.
They vary in size around an average of some eight inches in thickness and six
feet in height; all are heavily dented and chipped. Two rows are occupied by
students in black, who are cutting at the posts with wooden swords.
The outer wall of the school runs along the south and west sides of the open
area. To the east is a long, low limestone building with the image of a flask
painted over the main doors. A group of smaller buildings stands to the north.
A veteran fighter is here directing the students.
He is a middle-aged man with short graying hair, wearing a black doublet with
silver-slashed sleeves. On his shoulder is a badge with seven silver stars.
Healer and Surgeon
The building has a single room, much longer from north to south than from west
to east, paved in limestone and well swept. A single row of cots, about half of
them occupied, is spaced evenly along the east wall. A small trunk sits at the
foot of each bed. Along the west wall, a work table and a padlocked cabinet
stand opposite each cot. An orderly in a black robe, wearing a shoulder badge
with a flask emblem and four silver stars, stands in front of the only open
cabinet, counting the vials that stand on its shelves.
A priest of Tempus stands near the door.
He is a vigorous man, perhaps in his late thirties, with mousy brown hair and
a bristling mustache. He wears a black robe with silver-edged sleeves and a
shoulder badge with a flask and five silver stars. {90}A flaming sword symbol
hanging around his neck stands out sharply against the black cloth.
Courtyard
Here three buildings, set against the outer wall, roughly delineate a small
square area. During the day there is a steady traffic of black-clad students in
and out of the two on the east and west sides. These have a sword and a helm
painted over their respective doorways, and the constant ringing of metal
emanates from both.
School of Combat Weaponsmith
This is a mid-sized one-room building of limestone, somewhat grittier inside
than out. On either side of the door is a wooden rack, one carrying swords and
short-hafted weapons, and the other carrying spears and polearms. Off to one
side, an apprentice sits at a treadle-powered stone wheel, sharpening a short
sword. Coals glow red in a furnace built into the northwest corner. Another
apprentice stands next to it, working the bellows and sweating profusely. In
front of the furnace stands an anvil fixed to an upright section of tree trunk.
The burly dwarven smith works at his forge here.
He is ruddy and muscular, with an impressive silver beard, wearing a heavy
leather apron over a rough granite-grey tunic.
School of Combat Armoury
This is a mid-sized one-room building of limestone, somewhat grittier inside
than out. On either side of the door are three wooden stands; one bears a
complete set of armour, while each of the others holds only a helm, a cuirass,
and one or two other pieces. Off to one side, an apprentice sits at a worktable,
using an awl to pierce holes through a thick leather strap. Coals glow red in a
furnace built into the northwest corner. Another apprentice stands next to it,
working the bellows and sweating profusely. In front of the furnace stands an
anvil firmly fixed to an upright section of tree trunk.
The armourer of the School of Combat works at his forge here.
He is short and sinewy, with black whiskers and a soot-flecked face,
wearing a heavy leather apron over a rough sand-brown tunic.
A storage shed
This is a much smaller building than the others within the school, built of
timber and wattle-and-daub instead of limestone, almost leaning against the
stone outer wall. It is not particularly well lit or ventilated. A few chests,
crates, and stands for armour are lined up along the far wall.
