Bane

Whenever you type cast 'bane' <target> it just casts it on everyone in the room. So shouldnt this be a area spell? I figured since it is like bless you could pick a target. I would hate for people to be around when you put a bane from your god and it hit someone you would not want to.

It is coded as an area spell per D20.

For area aggro spells, if a target is provided, I think that it should affect only the target.

If it's possible, similar to Dalvyn's suggestion, when targeted, I think instead of attacking just the target, it should attack:
A. Anyone attacking the caster
B. Anyone attacking someone grouped with the caster
C. Anyone grouped with the target.
While it is an area spell and you should be able to target it (meaning you should be able to try and aim it so that it doesn't hit people standing away from you), I don't think you should have the luxury of suddenly making an area effect spell into a single target spell.

bane is just like bless, if you select a target with bless it affects only the target. But with bane it ignores the target and affects everyone. with bless if you cast it without a target it affects only you.

Deep slumber and targets

Deep Slumber
============
Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting]
Range: Ranged Area
Target: Noncombat
Syntax: cast 'deep slumber' [target]
Causes a magical slumber to come upon those in the area. The spell is
similar to Sleep, but can affect more powerful targets. Sleeping creatures
are helpless. Wounding awakens an affected creature, but normal noise does
not.
If no target is specified, the spell affects all the creatures in the room
except those that are grouped with the caster. If a target is given, only
that creature is affected.
Alrighty, so the helpfile states that you can select a target and only have the spell get that one person. Earlier there was a certain evil person(NPC) in a certain temple that they should not have been in. In an effort to try to find a non-violent way to remove them I thought I'd use deep slumber before moving them. There was also a good NPC in the room. So I typed 'cast "deep slumber" badNPC' and both of the mobs in the room were affected by the spell. Doesn't look like you can specify a single target like the helpfile states. Or, you can..it just ignores it and tries to get everyone anyway.
Tested it again later..
A watch patrolman wanders about here.
A nervous woman shopper is passing by here.
cast "deep slumber" watch
A watch patrolman resists your attempt to send him to sleep!
A woman shopper resists your attempt to send him to sleep!

This bug appears to affect all spells that can target either one or all NPC's/PC's on a room. I tried specifying a target with irresistible dance and crushing despair and both spells affected all other NPC's in the room and not just the target I specified.
To replicate:
1)goto piergieron
2)cast 'deep slumber/irresistible dance/crushing despair' piergieron
The spell should affect the tower guard regardless of specifying piergieron as the target.

Confirmed and added to an existing bug in Bugzilla. Bug priority raised and made more general. (Original bug report was specific to the Bane spell.) Thanks for reporting, Aveline, and researching, Tavik!

I played around with this a bit on the testport and could still produce this with irresistible dance, bane and crushing despair.
A badger is looking around.
A great horned owl hoots peacefully on a branch.
A wren hides in the tree leaves.
A curvy, heavychested male human is here before you.
The badger hides deeper in his large burrow then looks around.
cast irresist badger
You begin to chant.
You instil an irresistible urge to dance into a badger!
You instil an irresistible urge to dance into a great horned owl!
You instil an irresistible urge to dance into a wren!
You instil an irresistible urge to dance into A curvy, heavychested male human!
A curvy, heavychested male human is here before you.
A white-tailed doe is grazing on some herbs here.
cast bane doe
You begin to chant.
A curvy, heavychested male human manages to resist your spell!
a white-tailed doe manages to resist your spell!
A curvy, heavychested male human is here before you.
A wren hides in the tree leaves.
cast 'crushing despair' wren
You begin to chant.
A curvy, heavychested male human seems to shake off the affects of your spell.
You impose crushing despair upon a wren.
Two other hiccups, first Entangle produces the same if used against a target in the room...
A curvy, heavychested male human is here before you.
A ground squirrel is standing at attention here.
cast entangle squirrel
You begin to chant.
A curvy, heavychested male human plows right through the entangling growth.
a ground squirrel plows right through the entangling growth.
But not when used at range.
You see Wild path.
A curvy, heavychested male human and a ground squirrel are nearby north from here.
cast entangle n squirrel
You begin to chant.
a ground squirrel plows right through the entangling growth.
It can be used properly at a range without a target specified as well(IE. cast entangle n).
Second, Deep Sumber can now be used to target a single creature but this initiates combat with whatever you targeted whether your spell succeeds or fails.
cast 'deep slumber' curvy
You begin to chant.
A curvy, heavychested male human resists your attempt to send him to sleep!
You punch A curvy, heavychested male human's left arm solidly, but don't manage to get your full weight behind it.(1)
A curvy, heavychested male human is slightly scratched.
cast 'deep slumber' badger
You begin to chant.
You send a badger off into a magical slumber.
A badger weaves out of the way of your punch.(0)
If you use it at a range, it aggros anything it hits whether you specify a target or not.
look west
You see Wild path.
a badger, a wren and a white-tailed doe are nearby west from here.
cast 'deep slumber' west
You send a badger off into a magical slumber.
You send a wren off into a magical slumber.
You send a white-tailed doe off into a magical slumber.
A white-tailed doe walks in from the west.
A white-tailed doe lunges at you from out of nowhere!
A badger walks in from the west.
A badger lunges at you from out of nowhere!
A wren flies in from the west.
A wren lunges at you from out of nowhere!
look east
You see Wild path.
a ground squirrel and a great horned owl are nearby east from here.
You send a ground squirrel off into a magical slumber.
A ground squirrel walks in from the east.
A ground squirrel lunges at you from out of nowhere!
So instead of putting the victim to sleep, it starts a fight with them. If you specify no target with Deep Slumber it affects the entire room as usual and does not initiate combat.

EDIT: Two topics reporting the same, so I merged them.
