Concentration & Combat Casting
Concentration & Combat Casting
I have never seen an improvement in the skill concentration on any of my characters. One character in particular trained it to Journeyman from a mob and took the feat combat casting before learning concentration. I was wondering if combat casting prohibits the character from increasing in skill or works against the skill because the feat was taken before the skill?
Re: Concentration & Combat Casting
I have never seen this to be a problem, and I have several characters with the feat and the skill in conjunction. Has anyone noticed difficulties?

Zorinar has concentration to grandmaster along with the combat casting feat yet I track my spell failures to about 55% which is about the same it was when it was at journeyman.
I experimented and evaluated this a few months ago and reported it to a staff member privately. I have not retested/reevaluated it since.

Seek ye defeat? Ye shall most certainly find it.
Seek ye nothing? Then all ye can find is victory.

Re: Concentration & Combat Casting
Concentration only goes up when you (successfully?) cast a spell while having suffered damage during the casting. Since most wizards learn to cast spells in between rounds of attacks it is rare for it to go up unless you specifically work at it.

Re: Concentration & Combat Casting
Just did some in-depth testing on this. Concentration definitely works differently than most other skills, and this warrants more work. Even with the tools available to me on the testport, I was unable to confirm that skill advancement in it is working as it should.
The Combat Casting feat does have a clear and logical effect, though, while not inhibiting the operation of the concentration skill and its check. So my guess is that if anything is amiss, it is in the way the concentration skill advances in general, not a problem induced by the Combat Casting feat.

Re: Concentration & Combat Casting
I've gone from inept to novice in concentration since I came back in April, and I don't fight a lot (gained one level) on a non-combat casting character (ranger so he does not cast a spell very often in fight...)
Went from novice to adept on a combat casting character (priest) who casts a lot in fight. And this one fights a lot, he earned several time a complete level of XP while being 50.

Eeep, turns out I was using the wrong tool for the job, and misinterpreting the tool I was using! (Rusty after spending all my time sorting students into lab sections for a spell there...)
With the right tool in hand, I can confirm that combat casting does not interfere with progression of the concentration skill, and that progression in the skill seems to occur at a reasonable pace.
