Upcoming shield changes
Upcoming shield changes
New shield changes are very nice. Got a question.
Armorsmithing trade, can we now make the new shield types?

Re: Upcoming shield changes
I am working off of extremely outdated information, but if I recall correctly the Mithril Hall armorsmithing quest involved shield information. It may have changed since Gilain did the quest, but thought I would toss it out there for someone to double check and see if the quest text/actions match the new armor and shield changes.
Edit: Similar thought, how does these changes impact the current default shield (construct armor shield piece shield) armorsmithing creates? Not the command, the shields already in-game. Changed to one of the new classes, winked out of existance, decorative items like field plate?

Re: Upcoming shield changes
If anyone who has more recently completed one of them can confirm that a training quest for armoursmithing either discusses what shields can be made, or the command syntax for same, such that what they say may now be outdated, please PM me and let me know which one.
Mask indicated he wasn't sure what would become of old shields, his guess was that they would all become bucklers, at least in function. If anyone can confirm or deny that, we'll take that issue from there.
Armoursmithing helpfile has been updated but the code isn't working quite as intended yet, and some changes/fixes have yet to make their way from the testport to the game port. Please hold off on reporting problems or discrepancies for at least a few days.
Thanks for the tips and alerts on this stuff, Nysan!

Re: Upcoming shield changes
I have checked with a few folks that own shields Gilain has made and they all examine as bucklers. Haven't heard of any other results.
Thanks for the helpfile updates. They have answered a few questions and made a few more, hehe.
If there is anything else Gilain can test out, let me know. (As long as you don't break my full plate again. )

Re: Upcoming shield changes
Has anyone tried constructing armour from metal since the shield changes came in? I'm having trouble getting it to work, but the problem may lie in my raw materials. If you have tried and had trouble, what error message are you getting?
Re: Upcoming shield changes
Yesterday, the only command that did not work for me was 'construct armor shield piece shield'... which is expected.
Just now, I just tried crafting scalemail with lead I mined 2 days ago "construct armor legs lead scale" and I get a "You cannot make that armour out of metal." echo.
The helpfiles say new shields can be crafted with armorsmithing or woodworking. Maybe some lines were crossed and armorsmithing only accepts wood as a material? I will hunt down some wood, in-game, for testing and post again.

Re: Upcoming shield changes
Follow up... I was right. Armorsmithing is only accepting wood as a component:
-----
You are carrying:
(10) a piece of roseneedle pine (superb)
construct armor legs piece scale
<100%hp 0m 90%mv>
You ruin a piece of roseneedle pine trying to make armour.

Re: Upcoming shield changes
Mask has this fixed on the shields themselves, and with respect to metal armour more generally, though at this point only on the testport. That should come to the gameport soon. Thanks for reminding me about armoursmithing with metal more generally...looks like you can now make full plate from pine wood...eep! Reminds me of the upside-down Jennie airplane stamp. I'd be quite the lumberjack-fest to face an army so attired...especially with a battle-axe in hand.

Re: Upcoming shield changes
Fixes to armoursmithing are now in and working on the testport, and they should make it to the game port with the next copyover. Thanks for reporting the problems, everyone!

If you dislike something and have constructive reason to why it does not work please do share it. Posting "I don't like it!" doesn't help or add anything to the discussion.
Beshaba potatoes.

Re: Upcoming shield changes
Once again, conversation sparks a question.
What was the reason for leaving bucklers and tower shields out of armorsmithing/woodworking?
I tried to explain it to one of Gilain's students, but I couldn't think of a reason that would explain both shield types. Insight, please?

Re: Upcoming shield changes
I don't have it to offer - it may have been to keep the already complex CONSTRUCT code within reason? This is one only Mask can answer, really, I think...unless he discussed it with someone else.
Re: Upcoming shield changes
Nothing that needs a rush answer. Figured I'd ask so next time it comes up in a teaching session I would have a better answer than "an imm said so".
