Old ore?

I just bought a bunch of ore from a player, that I cannot smelt...
( 4) A lump of copper (perfect)
A lump of iron (perfect)
(16) A lump of silver (perfect)
a piece of tin ore (perfect)
(18) A lump of steel (perfect
Was I cheated or is this old ore that was not changed over in the updated ore system?

The only one of those that looks like ore to me is the tin. I think the others are pieces of metal that have been further melted.

I think you were cheated. Lumps (as opposed to pieces) come from a player using the cook command on metal items. Once 'cooked', I don't think you can do anything else with it.
This thread discusses the same issue.

Yeah, you were cheated.
That's what happens after you 'cook' metal (and maybe ore too?). For instance, if you take a cheap sort and keep cooking it until it 'breaks,' you'll get a lump of its base item's metal.

The word "piece" usually means ore or workable metal. i.e. "piece of tin ore", "piece of steel" For old stuff at least. New metal, look for "ore" or "ingot".
"A lump of copper", without "ore" and a quality, is something that was melted with the cook skill. i.e. "cook arrowhead". "a lump of inferior copper ore" would be a proper smeltable item.

If I'm correct those are piece of metal that have been "cook"ed with the cook command and not the smelt command

You sufficiently purchased all but one piece of cooked metal pieces.
I'd say ripped off, personally.

I remember this confusing the bejeezers out of me when I first ran into it!
However, I think it is above my head to fix it; the base object is
(75) molten metal (perfect)
and the adjective is set by the cooking code, I think, to give stuff like
(75) A lump of brass (perfect)
(75) A lump of iron (perfect)
What would be less confusing?
A "burnt shard of xxx?" A "burnt lump of xxx?" A "lump of burnt xxx?" A "distressed lump of xxx?"
We want something that makes it clear that it is junk, or at least not workable metal. There's a metallurgical term for metals that have been scorched like this, but I can't recall what it is!

I think the adjective 'ruined' would convey the right idea.

Avoid terms used in workable metal. New ore uses 'lump of inferior copper ore', so "lump" should be removed from cooked metal.
If we can establish that lump = smeltable ore, ingot = workable metal, pieces = old code metals/ore, and XX = cooked metal alot of the confusion would go away.
I would suggest something like... "some melted steel (perfect)". Easy to identify it as different from lumps, pieces, or ingots and describes the cooking process that made it.

or add an adj to it when you examine it... cause if it's a firs time i'm looking at it... i'll examine it, or why even have it in the game if it has no further worth... when you "cook" the metal to make something (i'm assuming that is what it is) why don't you make it unable to pick up with something like "this item is too hot to pick up" and after awhile just disappear?
*shrugs* my thought is, if the item is useless in the game... why have it?
or maybe i'm just bitter i spent coin on an item that has no use

It's dicey to remove something without knowing all it might be used for, so at least at my knowledge level, it needs to stay in the game! But I gave it a LOOK description,
Scorched and cracked, this tortured piece of metal isn't good for much of
anything anymore, except perhaps adding weight to your burden.
which will help the observant. Still, Nysan's point is very well taken, we should dump lump, which means changing the cook code.
How about "A ruined clinker of <metal>" or "An agglomeration of ruined <metal>"?
Edit: It looks like this same object is used for cooked glass, and who knows what else, so whatever is chosen needs to work for melted down almost anything.
