Mobs With Incorrect Languages

Post by Frachiir » Sun Jul 25, 2010 12:19 am

A centaur healer speaks in elven.
A centaur healer says to you 'I can't upderrtand you.'
It seems the centaurs of the Wealdath have given up their native tongue in favor of speaking Elven. This could be a real problem for the linguistically challenged PCs that try to start out here only to find no one knows Sylvan.

I think there's been a lot of this going on lately. Last time I checked, the Elves of Aglarond still exclusively speak common. Seriously, what kind of elf doesn't know Elven?

Confirmed on the centaurs. Checked the race file, and it looks to be correct, so this looks like a hard code mismatch.

I'll tackle that first, then take up the elves in the Yuirwood.

Centaurs no longer speak Sylvan? Centaur Grove area.

Post by Selveem » Fri Sep 24, 2010 8:26 pm

When my character started, Centaurs spoke either Common or Sylvan (most likely Sylvan), but lately they are speaking something else:

<100%hp 98m 100%mv> list
A centaur leatherworker speaks in a language that you do not recognize...
A centaur leatherworker says to you 'I ban't spfcprvand zou.'

I suspect it's Elven, but either way it's a language Centaurs don't start out with. I tried in both Common and Sylvan but he understood neither.

I just checked out the Centaur Grove on the test port.

It seems that all but two mobs in the complex are speaking Elven. Two of the mobs spoke common. Even the mobs inside the newbie area were speaking elven.

To my knowledge, Centaurs should start with Sylvan and Common, so this would make things very difficult for new Centaurs.

I believe this to be an area bug.

Actually, I think this is a hard code bug - in the language lookup table. See bug 938.

(This was only clear to me after I had a look at the Centaur race file, which I don't think you have access to - it could easily have been an error there, too, but it's set as Sylvan, just not manifesting as such in-game.)

Algorond could well be area code, though, haven't had time to check.

Confirmed m7829 and friends in Aglarond speak only common. Not sure why or how, as halfelf race file specifies

Code: Select all

Speaks LANG_ELVEN|LANG_COMMON
Speaking LANG_ELVEN|LANG_COMMON
and race files generally seem to overrule.

Ok, so it turns out that these are area code errors - the area code overrules, and the PCs have been set to speak the wrong languages. Problem is, it's whole swaths of them, so a fix using OLC would be time consuming. I'm game to do it, but want to check first: would it be far easier to fix this in the raw area file instead? (That's something I've never done.)

Thanks!

Just to update, the centaurs of the Wealdath are still speaking exclusively in Elven. No Sylvan, not even Common. In addition, I'm pretty sure there's no language trainers within the grove, though there might be a common teacher in the newbie area and there's at least one Elven teacher just outside it.

Oh, what has become of Centaur culture? Does no one teach their children to speak the elegant tongue of their fey ancestors? Woe to these once proud horse-people-things, forced to communicate either in the flowery poetry of the Elves or the whinnies, snorts, and neighs of their equine cousins!

Should be all fixed.
