Mounting

As the playing of a couple dwarves now, something has occurred to me, we can't mount while a horse is resting. For a full-sized horse it just wouldn't make sense for one of the wee folk of the realms to hop ten feet in the air and land in the saddle. I suggest that shorter races be allowed to mount while horses are resting because it seems more in character to me.

Meh, Dwarves are not super tiny. On average they're four feet tall. My ex- was 5'1" and she rode horses. She didn't participate professionally or anything (that I knew of) but she could ride them.

Regardless, your point's well taken. I'm not really sure why the code is inflexible in that sense; probably a stock thing. :)

If I want a big cart to haul lots of ore, I need a large mount to pull it, so unless were allowed to start getting two mounts AND a cart, my dwarf will have to ride a big horse, so I just thought it would feel more in character if I could have my horse rest, then mount, then have it get up again.

You can have 2 pets (hence 2 mounts if you choose so) and 1 cart already :)

Oh, I thought you could only have two pets or one pet and one cart. Okay, that is good news, but still I think for rp purposes that might still be a good change.

I think it's a good idea, even more, you should be able to mount while your mount is kneeling.

This is how you get on high mount such as elephant for example.

Yes, 2 pets and a cart are possible, ask Profit and Refund (Gilain's companions).

Nice idea and makes sense... though I am of the old mindset that read this thread and wonders why a dwarf is riding a horse.

Because this isn't Lord of the Rings and Dwarves aren't incapable and only for humor. :D

I can understand the reasoning behind the idea, but I question whether it's really necessary? As an alternative you could have your mount smote kneeling or whatever before you mount it.

I'm just of the mindset that we shouldn't be asking our coder(s) to spend their (valuable, limited) time implementing things like this, when there is a work-around and there are other issues they might be better spending their time addressing.

Yvonne, I agree wholeheartedly, but it doesn't matter what we think is worth our coder's time or the priority we believe it should be granted; that's all discussed at a higher level. It's alright to put it on the to-do list, but we should all be aware things will come in due time if they're accepted.

Not incapable... just prefers to walk. There is no shame in walking! (though it is more taxing with recent changes)

I'm not sure if this was just second edition weirdness or something just dreamed up in the past, but for the record, Dwarves have no problems with riding. I'm sure it's true they'd prefer to walk; they even get a stability bonus specifically for it when they're on the ground to avoid attempts at being bullrushed or tripped. As to riding, as far as I know there's never been anything suggesting they're 'uncomfortable' with riding anymore than any other normal bipedal race.

Honestly, I don't remember where it came from either... but I don't mind. Dislike of riding and hatred of boats/most water is built in now. It is part of old Gilain and I can't change it now.

Same with Gedras, but I rarely play him anymore.

My newer Dwarves, however, do not follow this malarky.

Some dwarves don't like boats because they defy nature by floating on water, whereas dwarves sink if you pitch them into a lake or stream. By contrast dwarves mistrust horses because they have four legs instead of two, making them haughty and conceited. And in some cases dwarves detest trees, because they have leaves and can create their own glucose from sunlight and water, and in some cases fermentation. Whereas dwarves cannot.

I would love to see animals be mountable when resting, if its possible in hardcode.

That's because the rest of you are all Witches.

And now I hate trees, too.
