I claimed a stag and a black bear in Ardeep.
They were following me around in the small forest area there, but they would not follow me across the creek, nor in the path going deeper in ardeep.

I'm not sure if both are the same bug (the animals not going out of forest areas) or if both are different problems (the creek being water - though you don't have to swim to cross it - and the path being another area), but when you buy a horse or a companion, it follows you everywhere and claimed companions should do the same.

For the most part, your bond with the animal would likely have to be rather strong to convince it to wander away from it's home out into the big wide world, no? While I don't know that this is quite a bug, it might be a nice improvement to the skill if it could remove a NOWANDER flag(If present) on the animal when it's successfully claimed. I'm not sure how that might affect any balancing, but with discretion it would seem to make sense.

Per SRD, animal companions are not limited to their home area. They are just like familliars, but with a different name IMHO.

It's just the mobs are set to not enter a certain terrain type to keep them confined to there area and not go all willy nilly on the world map. That's the issue. Perhaps make it so a claimed animal has those flags removed?
