Greet and Names

Sometimes I find the fact that you have to depend on someone to use the greet command very frustrating. I dont care what name they give me I want a little control on what name I associate with that person.

I saw this system on another MUD, long long ago and I loved it. I don't know if it is considered bad form to steal another MUDs idea... but I hope we do. Honestly I can't remember what the exact commands were so I am making up new ones if people can think of command words that work better that is great too.

This system would allow people to give false names, use nicknames and generally replace the greet system with something smoother.

MEET <character> <name>
Lets you basically assign a name to a character. The character must be in the room with you and you must be able to perceive them. It can also be used to replace a name with another name.

Example:

Code: Select all

A pudgy female halfelf is standing here.

A pudgy female halfelf says "My name is Pennibrook but everyone calls me Penny."

meet pudgy Pennibrook

You smile at Pennibrook 'A please to meet you Miss Pennibrook."

Pennibrook smiles at you. 'A pleasure to meet you.'

A lithe graceful male human slinks in with a shifty glance.

You ask a lithe graceful male human "What is your name?"

A lithe graceful male human watches you with stony silence.

Meet lithe SlinkySilent

Pennibrook smiles at SlinkySilent 'Petter! It has been forever!'

Meet SlinkySilent Petter

Petter gives Pennibrook a measuring look then nods once 'Penny'

MEET LIST
Lists everyone you have a name for along with the race, sex and any notes you have typed about them

Example:

Code: Select all

MEET LIST
Bob Elf Male Is married to Patty
Cereal Human Male
Franny Human Female Necromancer???
Patty Human Female Follower of Sune
Pippy HalfElf Female Ate a goblin heart
MuteGuy Dwarf Male

MEET LIST <person>
Lists the Name, race, sex, and any notes you have for the person specified

Example:

Code: Select all

Meet List petter
Petter Human Male Mask Follower also knows as Chaz

MEET NOTES <person> <Note>
Allows you to make notes about someone. Something you want to remember about them.

Example:

Code: Select all

Petter slips out a symbol of Mask before hiding it again.

MEET NOTES petter A follower of Mask

MEET COMPARE < Charter comparing with> <Character comparing names of>
You ask your friends what they know someone as, even if that person is not in the room. The person must confirm they want to compare then it tells you if they have a name for that person and what it is.

Example:

Code: Select all

You say to William 'Do you know that slinky fellow who has been around the bar lithe, dark hair. Always has a stony look.

William considers the questions thoughtfully

MEET COMPARE William Petter

William compares Petter's description. (This is if he agrees to compare)

William does not know anyone who matches Petter's Description

Bethany asks 'I think I know the fellow. Has the blue gloves?

Bethany has asked you to compare Petter's name.

MEET COMPARE PETTER

Bethany knows Petter as Chaz.

You say 'Chaz? Are you sure? Odd'

MEET NOTES petter Mask Follower also knows as Chaz

I like this idea, I actually have notes on my client of all the characters my character has interacted with...But having this coded would be 10x easier.

The topic's been brought up a few times. I really have grown fond of the system after having tried it on another MUD and think it would save me a big headache here.

This idea gets a vote from me.

Every time I run into someone who wont greet it makes me wish for this more and more.

Not sure how hard it is to code; but I like the idea :)

I really like this idea.
But wouldn't it need a lot of space on a server somewhere? Compared to the system we have right now. I mean all those notes and names would ahve to be saved and we are.. I don't know how many players and even more characters.. just a thought though.

A good system, intricate yet simple. We could alternatively simply have everyone able to "remember X whatever", with X being another player and whatever being whatever we'd like to remember them as. Greet might be modified to work similarly.

This is how it worked on the last MUD I played. The biggest advantage by far is that you can assume different identities in front of different people and if you are smart about rping it none would be the wiser. To keep the illusion complete the who list would also have to change, showing only adjectives for unmet PCs. Although perhaps the note keeping system is unnecessary and if you really wanted notes you could keep track of them yourself.

Won't that system clash with how the disguise skill works?

I think Disguise hinders a person to recognize, so they wouldn't be able to recognize the person as their dub or greet. Maybe I just don't understand how disguise works then, haha which is very possible! :D

Disguise lets you set adjectives, and every time someone enters, looks, etc it makes a disguise check. If successful they see the adjectives you set, if not they see your normal adjectives or name if you had previously greeted the person. Descriptions themselves have to be manually set when disguised, and manually set back when the disguise is removed or seen through.

I admit I don't understand the proposal that well which is why I asked if it would clash.

So wouldn't the disguise still show up if their check fails and their greet or name would show up if the check succeeds? I mean disguise should always show unless the person wins the check.
