Climbing on FK is rather dangerous at times. A single fall can leave you in a really dangerous position. In D&D, falling is also dangerous, but to a lesser degree.
This is how falling is supposed to work per D&D.
In short:
1d6 damage per 10 feet fallen; max 20d6*.
There are exceptions, too, but it's easier not to get into those; they're listed in the link above for the curious.
In FK, the damage seems pretty hard on the steep end of damage. As a level 50 fighter with 18 natural Con with a +2 bonus item, a single fall can take a huge chunk of our HP. Today, I observed damage ranging from 13% to 25% of my total HP in damage from single falls - an average of 23% from the six single-room falls I suffered during climb checks. From my calculations, FK is treating every failed climb as a fall of about 80 feet - almost half the full maximum falling distance.
Admittedly, most people don't climb; we know how much it hurts when we fall, but I think it should be a more feasible option.
I propose that failed climb checks give the normal max damage of 1d6 per attempt. To make things more dangerous, if necessary, we can institute a multiple-check system that upon failing one room, you can continue to fall until you reach the ground.

Re: Proposal: Reduce Falling Damage
It would be nice to have the damage reconsidered. Even a tough old dwarf, like Gilain, with his respectable CON, takes quite a hit when he falls. This opinion is driven by a life-long dislike of a specific gorge area in a dwarf heavy area.

Re: Proposal: Reduce Falling Damage
Oh, goodness, yes please. Falling damage is absolutely massive in this game. I think it might actually be based on a percentage of your maximum health as opposed to a set amount, but I'm not willing to test that theory. Having seen what falling does to a level 50 character, I'm terrified to try it with a lower level character.
I don't think falls are always very logical in this game, either. I've fallen to my near-death while under the effects of Fly, Wind Walk, and Levitate. I think that one might be a problem with the area, though, not falling itself.
