Dart Board in the Gentle Rest in set to fail

The new dartboard game in the Gentle Rest Inn is only letting you put darts into the wall, no shots seem to be going into the dart board no matter how many times you throw. I do play a blind character though, but its probably a bug.

Code: Select all

Gwain glares and throws at the dart board.
You missed the board and hit the wall!
You missed the board and hit the wall!

No, it is not a bug. The basic element of the program that determines your throw's placement is a skill check on Thrown Projectiles; you appear to be consistently failing that.

Late entry: upon some reflection, I will add some outside chance that you poor souls without any ability at Thrown Projectiles can still hit the target. Give me a day or so for that.

Well when you put it this way, that makes a lot of sense, it adds a new dimension to the dart game. Very clever.

Should it be based on that, though? I mean, throwing a dart is a LOT more simpler than landing a tomahawk.

And, if it's going to be based on the skill, shouldn't you get increases in the skill for using the dartboard? Just saying.

I added a small chance that an unskilled PC can still land a dart on the board.

Selveem: Darts are thrown projectiles. And, no, there are not skill increases associated because it is just a tavern game. The potential for abuse thereby is huge.

Sorry, what I'm trying to say is that if it's going to be skill-based (which is no different than in combat), it should get a skill increase.

If it is more like a game, why wouldn't it mirror all the other games like in the FK faire and be a percentage chance for all and maybe give a slight "luck" bonus depending on skill level. For instance, GM = +5% chance to hit bullseye?

The simple answer is because then someone would sit there and play darts until they had GMed "Thrown Projectiles" at no financial cost and no personal risk. That possibility is not acceptable. The game uses multiple variables to determine the thrower's degree of success.

Well, honestly, considering what I've seen with how the new mining, smelting, and crafting skills work, they have to spend a LOT of time to update those skills. Darts works on the same principles. IF you are going to take the time and energy learning how to be skillful at darts, and it is considered a thrown projectile, which it is, since you DID have darts as a weapon category at one time, then you should still be able to get proficient at it whether it is using a stable target, as in archery, or whether it is using it in the wilds, where LOTS of things can affect it's performance. I DO think you would get better at using darts as a weapon outdoors, considering all the other factors to keep you from hitting your target, but then look at all you have to deal with when throwing darts at a dartboard. WOULD it take longer on a dartboard, or throwing things at living targets? Do people who develop archery get to raise THOSE skills at an archery target range? Seriously, do the archers who use those archery targets in Ardeep get those skills improved? There's no risk there, just money spent on arrows....which could also work with darts, by the way....so let's just rethink all the arguments in this thread, shall we?

Belose: There is not an argument. The answer is no. This is a tavern game meant to add some life to role-play; it is not a training area. It is a little irritating that I spent the time to create a dart board for role-play purposes and I received the gamut of responses from the much appreciated "thanks" to the much less appreciated "how can I twink this?" and "why don't you rethink your arguments?".
