I can type 'get gold p' and it gets my coins from the pack. 'Put gold p' also works. So why doesn't 'look in p' work?

When you abbreviate something, the game uses an algorithm to guess at what you meant by it. It is not perfect, but it is usually consistent. I can not reproduce what you describe here, but what you are experiencing may be because the algorithm eliminates some possibilities (I was going to say non-containers, but that's not it) for GET and PUT, but not LOOK.
If you can provide the echoes (the full text you get) from this, I might be able to give you a better answer as to what's afoot. Had the issue been the abbreviation engine being smart enough to eliminate non-containers for GET and PUT but not LOOK IN, that might have been a code-able improvement, but it doesn't seem to be the case...it is something else.
Saying GET P or REMOVE P or LOOK P might give you an idea of what the game is understanding "P" to be in the LOOK IN case.
