Writing Ability: Can a mage author a book?

Although I have never played a bard myself, I have usually assumed that only bards can author within FK...However, I have recently considered the aspects of rping a mage, that spends his time writing books or journals on the findings of his spells. Granted, the mage would need to role play spending exhaustive amounts of hours researching the spell. These books could then be sold in component stores around faerun, or merely treded from mage to mage. Please let me know what you think about this idea, or correct any assumptions I stated above.
