First, with combatmode -ranged the bows show up as being in the bows category, and with combatmode +ranged they show up as being in the staves category.
Second, I have bows on my class list (a warrior) and my skill is apprentice, but I have a -2 to hit...
This is with Trillarel, my alt tailored for ranged combat...
Some problems with bows
Re: Some problems with bows
Read carefully:
[-ranged ] You do not use ranged/melee weapons as melee weapons in combat.
It is a short bow in the bows category of weapons.
[+RANGED ] You use ranged/melee weapons as melee weapons in combat.
It is a short bow in the staves category of weapons.
This is correct.

Beshaba potatoes.
Re: Some problems with bows
I understand the use of the combat mode, but why the different results upon examining?
And I need a way to fix the -2 to hit.

Re: Some problems with bows
The different results reflect the way that the game views the object. It is the same way with polearms: one could wield a lance dismounted and it would show up as a polearm, but it will show up as a mounted polearm when wielded by a mounted PC. You are using the staves weapon skill when you use your bow as a melee weapon in melee combat.

Re: Some problems with bows
I believe that the '-2' that is shown only applies when using the weapon as a staff. I believe that the code accurately uses dexterity, and crossbow skill, when using a crossbow at range.
