[Weapon] Naginata adjustment.

Naginata should be able to be wielded one-handed whilst mounted as per other, similar polearms. There is a precident for its use like this, especially in fantasy games.(see Dynasty Warriors for an example)

This may actually be a bug...

Code: Select all

It is a masterwork naginata in the polearms category of weapons.
It can be picked up, held, held in both hands.
It cannot be worn with any other armour.
It is medium in size and would fit any body type.
While mounted it shows it as that as opposed to mounted polearms. Under no circumstances could I get it to let me wield it one-handed.

I am not sure that one should be able to wield that weapon in one hand while mounted, at least not without a considerable penalty. The same, I think, should apply to many polearms which are really infantry weapons. I believe that the stabbing weapons are fine for one hand (BOAR_SPEAR, HARPOON, JAVELIN, LANCE, PILUM, SPEAR, TRIDENT), but that the slashing ones (SCYTHE, HALBERD, NAGINATA) should be either held in two hands or penalized in one hand. This is because these are, again, infantry weapons designed really to fight against horses; the horse's speed does not complement their use, it complicates it, and it would be spectacular to see them used effectively in one hand.

The naginata in general looking at the style and way it's used is not ideal for mounted combat. It most definetely requires two hands because it's a modified katana blade on a staff in a diamond shape for easy twists one way or the other. I'm a fan of japanese weaponry <.<

I'll also concur that a naginata should only be used two-handed. Being on horseback has no effect on making the naginata possible to use one-handed. Since the weapon is a slashing weapon, it requires torque to gain force (whereas a polearm is piercing and you use the horse's increasing momentum in one direction to amplify your force). If you've ever held a long pole in one hand, try swinging and you'll find it incredibly difficult.

Looks like Scythe (and probably Halberd) are still set to be Mounted Polearms when mounted. I rather agree that if Naginata doesn't fit the bill for it, neither of those to do. Would it be a bother to adjust?

It's still using a pole arm while mounted. It should probably stay as a mounted pole arm while mounted, due to the difficulty in using it while a'horse, but not be wield-able in one hand.

Agreed, a scythe is an immense weapon with a horizontal blade that can almost extend half its length, very hard to wield even with two hands.

Code: Select all

naginata polearms none metal
halberd polearms mounted polearms metal
scythe polearms mounted polearms metal
This is defined by the weapons table, so removing given weapons from the mounted polearms category is a snap...but requires Mask, since only he can edit the weapons table.

While I tend to agree with the conclusions drawn in this post, I don't think it worth his limited time to adjust.
