Fletching and items lost from it

So, I know that at low levels in a trade you're bound to fail a lot.
Arrow heads have always been that one item that's either been searched for to no avail until that one metal smith comes online to help. Or you have to spend hours offline to make enough of, so long as you can get the metal for it.
When you fail in fletching, you lose the arrow head and the wood but not the feather. Is it possible to flip that around? Lose the wood and the feather, but not the arrow head? I've made a number of arrows IRL and I don't ever find that I've ruined the head so bad I can't reuse it. Could even do damage to the arrow head so that after like three or four tries it's lost, but not with each failure. That causes us to run out of arrowheads really fast at low levels.

As a ranger you can mine, smelt and make arrowheads! Happy hunting. ;)

Is there a non-class/race specific quest to get Fletching yet? Not asking for any IG details, just if the possibility exists.

No, only rangers. I would like to see it opened up to druids too.

I agree with Beskytter. In regards to fletching it is the arrowhead that should not only be the item salvageable during crafting, but should also be possible to recover from a broken arrow. It would make more sense that the feather and shaft of an arrow be used up in failed attempts in making arrows.

All the trades currently locked to rangers only should be opened up. There are plenty in a world like this that could do these things. I kinda think slice should be more a trade skill to earn via a quest as well since. Not all trappers are rangers or druids that can hunt for skins and meat. I understand that some trades are locked to certain type classes like the scribe and brew trades/skills and how wand making would be. But skinning could be done by anyone with the time to learn it and hone there skills. Same with leather crafting and fletching.

I think fletching and leatherwork outside of rangers should require an app (if at all) that would clearly demonstrate why your character would know this trade. Something in his/her background? Lots of time spent with rangers? Rangers are a difficult class as is currently, and it's nice to allow them a nifty perk for all their unique efforts. Just my opinion, though.

There is another quest in game to teach fletching to any class, though it may be limited to elves and halfelves. Also, you can learn fletching through the traditional method of passing on trades, a pc teacher. I would support transitioning slice to a trade that could be learned by any character.

I agree entirely with Kinni, in regards to not opening every trade, etc of rangers to every class. I strongly believe that shouldn't be done.
But skinning could be done by anyone with the time to learn it and hone there skills. Same with leather crafting and fletching.
Almost everyone can do everything, true and some could have interest in this, but it gives rangers that tiny perk. If not; why not just make a fighter and not have to suffer all the limitations that rangers do?

As for the original post: I would be in agreeance that the feather and wood should sac before the actual arrowhead. Each time trying to fletch, it could "ware down" the arrowhead making it's condition lower each time, until it's unusable.

That's the point. It's not just a ranger's class. They have tanners and leather workers and fletchers and the like as city dwellers. They have hunters that aren't rangers that go out and hunt for skins and meat to sell to those in the city. But think of it like this. Why would an adventurer put in the time to become a master smith? They wouldnt really but it's somethign to do in game atop of just grinding on enemies and another point of role play. Some of the best magical leather isn't made by rangers or druids. It's probably the work of some city part of a leatherwright(think thats the word) guild that has mastered his craft and the work of some wizard or other. Same with fletching. A warrior who uses a bow and isn't a ranger or even elves since it's a commonplace weapon for them would know how to replace there supply of arrows if they can come up with said supply. I was meaning more for leather working though in the sense not alot of people use it and it'd be good to get it spread about in game. Especially if they worked out one of the suggestions about altering the desc of armor with items you can buy so it isn;t just leather armor of (insert animal here) and so forth.

I'd like to bump this post, highlighting the request of having the fletching of arrows not waste arrowheads and wood on failure.

It would make more sense to have the wood and feather be wasted, as those are the most delicate items in the process. Arrowheads are very reusable.
