Major Image dismissal

Post by Algon » Sun Apr 20, 2014 4:34 am

After playing around with Major image I came across a bit of a bug. While trying to dismiss my image I accidentally dismissed my pet, which was NOT in the same room as me. So not sure if that is a bug on its own, I haven't tried to dismiss the pet again while in a different room, but I digress. I was thinking that instead of having to dismiss the image, you could "cancel" the image. Syntax "cancel image" Your illusion slowly shimmers and fades away. This would make more sense than having to dismiss it.
Thoughts?

That would be handy, a similar command would be nice with Gate portals.
"Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!" "'Tis as impossible that he's undrowned as he that sleeps here swims." "I'm begging you please wake me up, In all my dreams I...."

Agreed.

Along with a command for the wizard to close their own gate, maybe allow dispel magic to also close them, but with a DC roll against the skill of the wizard that opened it (if it isn't their own gate, naturally). So any wizard able to use Abjuration would be able to close any gate, provided they have the skill.

Definitely agree with the Major Image command to dismiss your illusion.

I do not agree with having a command to dismiss a Gate spell. Part of the choice of using Gate is that you can enter through with much less delay in your next actions versus teleport, astral walk, shadow walk etc, but it comes at the price of being vulnerable to something else taking a stroll through it, be it another character or a monster. And then a responsible caster should wait on the other side for the few minutes the Gate lasts to ensure nothing takes advantage of it, to me that is very reasonable for this kind of spell.

Well... I researched the SRD for gate to see if there were any references to closing them and discovered that it isn't supposed to function as it does in FK.
d20 SRD wrote:A gate cannot be opened to another point on the same plane; the spell works only for interplanar travel.
It's basically supposed to allow the wizard to planeswalk or summon creatures for pacts and familiars. Which isn't a very big deal, because I'm fairly certain that you could fix the discrepancy by just changing the name of the spell to another spell that functions the same way. (i.e. gate currently functions like a very powerful dimension door). Although, dispel magic does allow you to dispel gates.
d20 SRD wrote:One object, creature, or spell is the target of the dispel magic spell. You make a dispel check (1d20 + your caster level, maximum +10) against the spell or against each ongoing spell currently in effect on the object or creature. The DC for this dispel check is 11 + the spell’s caster level. If you succeed on a particular check, that spell is dispelled; if you fail, that spell remains in effect.
Just thought I would mention it, but the reason I suggested allowing gates to be dispelled magically, is so that opponents could possibly disable them, not to alleviate any responsibility for the caster. It would be much like using dimensional anchor, except you would be targeting the creation, not the caster.

I could see being against an instantaneous command that closes them (it would be easier to code though), but dismissing it magically would require preparation, the expense of a spell slot or more, and the skill to do so.

In the spirit of this, I'd be in favor for a command that eats up a charged dispel magic slot to close gate, dismiss illusions and the like, though only you design guys could say if its easier to make said command, or just allow the dispel magic spell to be cast on *objects* and remove stuff from a room that has certain flags on it.
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
