Realm Words for Important Holidays
Realm Words for Important Holidays
Hello everyone!
Whenever a holiday comes around, I kinda have to think of RP words for those holidays in the game. So, let us make up all the words right now to get that out of the way. If we manage to compile an entire list, let's move this thread to the "World" folder.
What I know so far:
Christmas/Hanukah in Faerûn is "Winterfest"
Easter of Faerûn is "Greengrass"
A leap year is "Shieldmeet"
Halloween of Faerûn is "Moonfest" or "The Feast of the Moon"
Thanksgiving of Faerûn is "High Harvestide"
I guess Groundhog Day is "Gwainhog Day"
We still need names for:
St. Valentine's
Earth Day (Yes, this is a holiday. I am really big on environment awareness.)
Mother's Day
Father's Day
International Workers' Day (the May 1st one, not the September one)
April Fool's
Super Bowl Sunday (why not?)
Friday 13th (Beshaba's day?)
If I missed any other holidays, please tell me.

99% of these holidays do not translate into Forgotten Realms lore.
"He served, but found no pride in service. He fought, but took no joy in victory. He drank, to drown his pain in a sea of wine... ...It was hate that drove him. Though he committed many sins, he never sought forgiveness."
Re: Realm Words for Important Holidays
I mean, FK has existed for 15(14?) years without a uniform list of this and been just fine. No reason they need to be referred to at all, or even called the same thing every year.
Not really something I want to add to people's list of things to remember.
Bob says OOC 'dude read the list its heart day not love day'.
Ehhh, ehh. :)

Not to mention these things would be distinctly different based on region and religion (not to mention race). Alitar's hometown called it the Firehair Festival. If you want to apply a name to these things for your characters you're welcome to, but that it would be applied to other peoples' characters is a bit much considering what Aldren said is entirely true. Most holidays simply don't translate to Faerun.

Re: Realm Words for Important Holidays
But we do role-play these out. During Halloween in Market Square, there was a big cauldron in place of the fountain and the Constable was a mummy. What are we supposed to call that day?

Re: Realm Words for Important Holidays
Only holiday as far as i'm concerned that needs to be recognized is the all important Pirate day in september. Naval combat, sabers through guts, Umberlee screams and stuffed parrots for everbody
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
Re: Realm Words for Important Holidays
Well, Easter is -kind of- like Greengrass, in that they're celebrated in the springtime. It's a day to celebrate the first day of spring. Many faiths use it as a special day, and have their own ways to celebrate.
Shieldmeet is the equivalent of leap year, and is typically used for festivals. It, like leap year, happens every four years.
Feast of the Moon, or Moonfest is kind of like Halloween. It's the day that marked the onset of winter, and they honored their ancestors and respected the dead.
High Harvestide is like Thanksgiving, as in they celebrated the harvest and an abundance of food.
The equinoxes and solstices are noted in Forgotten Realms lore too, kind of like how they are in some real life traditions.
So yeah, there are some good, canon holidays for you! Not all of our holidays translate over, but some do.

Don't forget also, a bunch of these aren't celebrated outside of the US or are celebrated on different days of the year (Mother's Day for example).

Pffft! You non-US people don't count!Lirith wrote:Don't forget also, a bunch of these aren't celebrated outside of the US or are celebrated on different days of the year (Mother's Day for example).

Re: Realm Words for Important Holidays
I'm pretty sure there aren't any canon examples for any of the other ones you listed, as they generally aren't 'Forgotten Realms', fantasy-based holidays. Especially things like 'the super bowl' (ew, lol).
However, I'm pretty sure every day is 'earth day' for those of the naturey persuasion. Other than that, I agree that we don't need to make up names for things that aren't already in FR lore, or the things that don't belong there.

Justice is not neccesarily honourable, it is a tolerable business, in essence you tolerate honour until it impedes justice, then you do what is right.

Re: Realm Words for Important Holidays
The other trick to that is that fk time doesn't go with our time. What happens for us once a year would happen there twelve times in the same period of time. I've gotten the impression that the staff changes things mostly for ooc fun, not to make it any really serious part of lore. One of those suspend belief things that, while not in true strict roleplay style, to me is a whole heck of a lot of fun.

This is very much true. If it becomes a genuine bother - I can always cease the act. :)faylen wrote:The other trick to that is that fk time doesn't go with our time.
