Anyone know the name of...

Post by hasryn » Wed May 27, 2015 11:16 pm

Anyone know the name of this style of classic men's clothing. Specifically the coat in the picture below? I've been searching for what it's referred to specifically and am coming up with nothing!

here's another view of it!

Doesn't seem all that distinctive a jacket other than specifying floppy lapels and a droopy collar.
A goblin, a trickster, a warrior? A nameless terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. A most feared being in all the cosmos. Nothing could stop, hold, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.

I know it seemed something that'd fit in the time of oliver twist or whichever in that time period. I've been trying to find patterns that might work to make one but alas am finding nothing. It makes me think like a nice precursor to the colonial period jackets.

Jefferson appears to be wearing a justacorps.

Might also be a frock coat.

Maybe a mix of them. From what I saw when I looked up justacorps the buttons going halfway down and stopping tend to mean 18th century style justacorps so a fuller tail/skirt to the coat?

The problem with in studio productions over an extended period is that more than likely the coat is made on sight based on conceptual drawings and has no real world equivalent.

I'd call it a frock coat, but not the modern kind. Or, a "Wot Adam Ant Wears".

I'd argue that the justacorps is a fancier version of the frock coat. The pirate should go with the frock coat, while the admiral should go with the justacorps. All depends on how scrappy you want to get.
