Why thieves?
Why thieves?
Don't see many of them in game, and I'm curious why people like the ones they have. I've only dabbled in them in other muds and FK, and don't think I ever played one in tabletop.
Why do you like them? What special roleplay considerations do they have that appeal to you?

Re: Why thieves?
I am biased in that I have always loved the thieves class in tabletop and any MUD. That being said, you'd be surprised at how popular the class it becoming...
I am quite partial to their unique skills. Wizards have spells to detect traps or hidden things (I think?), but they are severely underutilized. My favorite part of being a thief is being a scout. I have been able to help my team by hiding and sneaking undetected ahead and relaying information to prep a party. I have been able to retrieve corpses from hellish places. The RP of a thief is more fluid than some other classes and allows for a varied group of characters. Good thieves, bad thieves, assassins, scouts, explorers, etc. Disabling traps, picking locks to get into super-cool places, and backstab are all part of the allure.

I think its much better now that feats like weapon finesse are easier to find.
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
Re: Why thieves?
I think there are more than you know about too. If they are good, you might not even know they are a thief.
I have had two and I love them like Kinni does. Yes, they are hopeless for anything solo, but some of the things they can do are just plain fun.

Re: Why thieves?
For me, it really just comes down to the roleplay. Since his creation, my rogue's evolved and reinvented himself dozens of times, and I find it interesting to watch. It's not that other classes don't also have flexibility in their roleplay, most of them do, but thieves' unique skill set really incentivizes going at things from a different angle. I encourage anyone who hasn't already, to give the class a try, but I'll echo that I'm pretty sure there are a lot more than most people know of.
The thing you have to keep in mind going into it is that, if you're going toe-to-toe, it's not likely you're going to win. Thieves aren't particularly good at combat here, and they require learning a completely different way to play from other classes, which is part of the fun in itself. Sure, that fighter over there can tank a dragon's fire, but can he sneak into its lair and make off with phat loot? Thieves can go places no other class can, and the less often you have to fight, the more you're winning. At least in my own experience!

What are you talking about? What, that guy?
That was like that when I got here.

Yeah, I've noticed that they are substantially weaker than most other classes, but that doesn't bother me too much. I have several other "powerful" characters I can go rock mobs with if I feel the need.
What I was looking for was something that sort of evolves and grows through different types of roleplay. A scout, a sometimes burglar, a master of a thieves' guild, or whatever.

Re: Why thieves?
The most interesting RP I have had with thieves (having never been one) is when my LG PC needed something from one. The back and forth of negotiation and favors owed to unsavory characters was interesting - a detour for me into CG. Many thieves are not outright, murdering Cyricist evil but are instead self-absorbed evil or chaotic neutral; it makes for an interesting third path beside the hard line good or evil.

Re: Why thieves?
My answer: Why not?
I once had a main character who was a thief, and I played her for a long, long time, and I have a couple other lower-leveled thieves as well. The roleplay is fascinating and complicated, and they really do have a whole other way of existence about them. A thief can really be anything, and you probably just haven't seen the ones that are about. I know a handful already that have been on recently, so they are for real, not pretend
If you're curious I'd say give it a shot. I've always found it entertaining.

Re: Why thieves?
Indeed, why not? The thief class is so versatile. You could even make a heavy armored, bladedancer type thief, a "sword and board"(Like my thief named Mungo). The possibilities are nearly endless, feats are VERY important for the thief class, choose wisely!
*Zuldorrn Veladorn, Conjurer of Beshaba*
*Mungo, Outrider of the Hin*
*Rahlkemnon, Cleric of Shaundakul*

Re: Why thieves?
I'd also add Ungtar, they are not substantially weaker. But are substantially more difficult to play. Love the thief class. They are also amazing when grouping with others.

They want you to walk down the path of darkness. Don't do it son! Them cookies aint worth it!

Heh. Too late. I'm eatin' dem cookies!
I took the opportunity to combine two new things ... a thief and a deep gnome. Maybe not the best combination, but I'm having fun with it.
Blingdenstone is exceptionally well done. It's an encapsulated area as big and as detailed as some of the smaller muds out there by themselves! That Solo guy did a bang up job.

And, not all member of the "thief" class are dark. My halfling thief is in the Yondallan faith. All depends on how you play it. Of course the skill set and class does attract for evils and neutral then good. But I'm sure theres some good aligned thieves out there

Re: Why thieves?
What steered me away from thieves early on was being told that there were no guilds that accepted good aligned thieves. Now that I'm aware that it isn't exactly factual, I decided to branch out.Korwin wrote:And, not all member of the "thief" class are dark. My halfling thief is in the Yondallan faith. In terms of roleplay, Han Solo is always more interesting than Luke Skywalker. So the complexity of the thief in roleplay is appealing. Especially if you can build in some sort of purpose-driven concept.
Re: Why thieves?
Rekka, the scout of Torm, is a great example of this kind of role. He uses his skills and subtlety to scout ahead for fighters et al.

I could see some thieves being "thief-takers" or bounty hunters and following the gods of justice and such.Harroghty wrote:Rekka, the scout of Torm, is a great example of this kind of role. He uses his skills and subtlety to scout ahead for fighters et al.
I asked a bartender once what the hardest drink to make was. He said "rum and Coke." I had to ask him why. Seemed counter-intuitive. He said, "People make rum and Coke at home and they know exactly how they like it. So I can never make it perfectly."
That's what I'm starting to think about thieves. They seem "vanilla" until you consider the near unlimited ways in which you can roleplay them. You can pour in the exact proportions you prefer.

There is an non evil thieve's guild built into the game called the spy's guild.
Justice is not neccesarily honourable, it is a tolerable business, in essence you tolerate honour until it impedes justice, then you do what is right.

I haven't seen anything beyond 2 in game for guilds. I've seen where the spy guild, but is it even open for people to use?
