Favourite character class and why

Post by Yemin » Sun Oct 18, 2015 7:02 pm

WIZARDS WIZARDS WIZARDS

Its always been wizards in tabletop and its no different for me in FK. The first dnd game I was invited to I made the newbie mistake and played a half drow enchanter wizard for my first char... this was 3.5 so....

Result..., I was a waste of space character for the party... I literally casted nothing useful because playing a wizard is hard even for experienced players plus 3.5 is one of the harder versions to get the hang off and in the end the DM was nice enough to include a staff of dispel and staff of hungry shadows which were the only useful things I contributed for that entire campaign.

I used a Saber as a weapon which I wasn't proficient with, i got geased by a Swamp hag and enslaved. I generally ran around and used experditious retreat to keep ahead of enemies while the party wailed on them which i suppose is useful cos everyone wants to kill the wizard first.

But man did I have fun being that waste of space. Strangely enough, I've always loved magic in general but disliked wizards in popular fiction in films and the like. Or at least, wizards on tv and in movies have never made it into my favourite character list. I don't even like famous FR wizards. Elminster, Tam, Manshoon, Larloc, all powerful... all just meh to me. But I love playing them.

Once I learnt to be ok at it, I loved it even more. The mix of the tactics involved in having to be prepared but being immensely powerful when you are. Having the right answer for almost every cenario. Walking into a cave of ogres bare handed and walking out with their smoking corpses behind you, a raised eyebrow and a smug look on your face... whistling a nursery rhyme is ambrosia. I believe, eventually the wizard class in dnd to me became the perfect fit because it allows you to legally cheat at the same game where almost everyone else has to play by the rules.

So..., whats your favourite class and why? I'd be curious to know. Over the years I've encountered people that stringently hate spellcasters and I can kinda, sorta get it. I don't see how a game can be completely balanced as soon as you introduce spellcasters into them, but Fantasy is too rife with them to feel like fantasy without them.

Also, Has playing Fk changed your opinion on any classes and why?
What do you like about your class and how does it compare to similar classes in other settings be it muds, vid games, films what have you?

As a note. there isn't a base class I hate. I've played them all and appreciate their unique qualities. Next to Wizards is fighters for me but on with the show.
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!

Personally I've always favored a fighter class. No matter which game I've played, I always start out as a fighter to learn the systems. They're simple, powerful, and oh so versatile. They can literally come from any background and have depth to them, their tactics can vary from person to person. They're amazing. Over 1/3rd of my characters are fighters or based warrior.

I've also favored the RP-strict clerics. They come as a second best to me, despite being the more powerful class against generally any other class. The RP is fun, but limiting as you're restricted to "My God's more God-y than yours." sort of RP, but of course you could always play the open minded.

FK hasn't changed my opinion, only strengthened it, I think. Fighters here have so many options, I'm glad to see when fighters create and stick with it. Probably sounds funny coming from me. ;)

I loathe wizards with a passion. I have 4. Of my whole list of names I put in that other thread, I have 4 wizards out of all of that. All the games I play, a wizard/mage is always my last play through. I'd even play a thief/rogue before a wizard. Yes they're versatile and yes they're customizable (You have so many options!), but I just don't like the maintenance of them. Knowing which spells or methods to use throws me off. Fighters don't mess with that, and clerics (as mine are built) are mostly just concerned with keeping you alive.

You know, the really odd thing is that I can sit there and go through hundreds of spells from level 1 to 9 when bilding a dnd wizard. but I get from lvl 1 to 4 of the druid or cleric spell list and zzzzzzzzzz
Not to mention the class features... anyway.

I have played only one spell caster in 22 years (or so) of gaming. Fighters and paladins are my choice because I've loved the Middle Ages since I was a little boy. My characters are knights in most cases; they are LG in most cases.

The chaotic-aligned fighter is my favorite. This range covers all of my favorite character concepts: the Northman berserker, the charismatic ship captain, the orc warchief, the pyromaniac, the mercenary, the party-goer...

Priests have always been my favorite, and make up the majority of my characters. I love their setup, with strength AND magic, and healing always comes in handy. The range of roleplay in priests is wonderful, since the gods are so different. I've played most of the classes, but priests are nearest and dearest to me.

PNP - shadow dancer bard.
A goblin, a trickster, a warrior? A nameless terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. A most feared being in all the cosmos. Nothing could stop, hold, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.

Thieves, often multiclassed with melee classes such as fighters or monks, because I like to be able to do things such as picking locks, detect traps, infiltrate places while hidden, etc.

When I first started FK, I was very heavily in the wizard camp. Near endless spell combinations? Invaluable to parties? Yes pls. That said, I was absolutely terrible at it, going the first eight months or so of my wizard's life without ever using any protective/buff spells(in favour of moar fireballs).

Lately though, I'm leaning more toward thieves. There's just something very appealing about sneaking past big monsters to scout an area for your party, or disabling the trap that one shot your fighter last time he came here.
What are you talking about? What, that guy?
That was like that when I got here.

And here we have another oddity. I love knights and paladins in fiction. As I said above, I usually find the wizards meh in a story butKing Arthur, Artoria, Artoragus, whichever you prescribe to and his knights, be it the Noble Percival, or the drunkard version of Gawaine, I like them all. But that doesn't ever seem to translate well into roleplay for me. Mechanically I love playing paladins and in a table top session of 3 hour periods per week I can roleplay them and enjoy it... but throw me onto a MUD where I have the opportunity to roleplay anything close to them in the amounts I rp my other characters and my patience gets strained. I always feel like I should be almost constantly doing something involving my shield.

As for clerics, I've never had the opportunity to play a shady one I think is the issue. No one usually likes to cleric in whatever group I find so when I play one, I end up making close to a sterotypical... Lathanderite priest I suppose is the closest example. Playing a Maskarran priest sounds pretty interesting.

I enjoy rogues and thieves in fiction but I feel that DND in general doesn't represent alot of their abilities very well until its 5th edition. Simply put I don't feel like a thief when I play a thief. The idea of a gentleman highwayman or the dirty bandit attracts me more than the assassin though. Perhaps I like characters that like to be seen? Who can say.

What about Shadow dancers is it that does it for you Talos? Their abilities or all the black silk?
I kind of have a very vague image of what a Shadowdancer bard would be like... but honestly the stealth aspect and the showmanship is clashing in my head a little.

Wizards have always been my favourite class to play on any game, and no different here. If I find a game, and struggle with casting mechanics, I usually pick something like a fighter, or rogue. Anything that I can rush in, and beat up the enemy, but not get squished so badly.

Elves. Wait...
Weit in der Champagne im Mittsommergrün,
dort, wo zwischen Grabkreuzen Mohnblumen blühn,
da flüstern die Gräser und wiegen sich leicht
im Wind, der sanft über das Gräberfeld streicht.

Why? Because truly they can be anything. Come from all walks of life an' be scoundrels or heroes even if only anti heroes and the sort!

Also fighters and conjurers are my runner ups! a samurai is awesome just like a battlerager!

Which on a mud like FK, versus a vid game like neverwinter?

Also... Elves? I've never been able to get into the mind set of any other race. I play humans 99% of the time because I feel like i'm rping the race wrong whenever I play something different.

On Neverwinter, GW 1 and 2, Diabolo II, Lineage II and FFXIV I played the ranger type classes.

On FFXI, Priston Tale and FK I play healers and nukers namely, though I did have a very strong ranger for a time. I LOATHED healing on FFXI, but if you're good at the role you get stuck in it.
