Help file for deity symbols

Whenever I come across a faith symbol that I don't recognize, I wish that there was an easy way of looking up what faith that symbol referred to. I think that a list summarizing all of the different symbols and what gods they refer to would be helpful.

I've typed up what I think this could look like.

Bane – Green rays squeezed forth from a black fist
Beshaba – Obsidian antlers on a red triangular pendant
Callarduran – A golden amulet set with a ruby star
Chauntea – A blooming rose on a wreath of golden grain
Corellon Larethian – A silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon
Cyric – White jawless skull on black or purple sunburst
Garl Glittergold – A small gold nugget on a chain
Gond – A tiny gear holy symbol
Gruumsh – An unblinking eye
Helm – A tiny gauntlet holy symbol with an eye on it
Ilmater – Two pale hands bound at the wrist with red leather
Kelemvor – A skeletal hand holding silver scales
Lathander – A pink disk
Lolth – A spider holy symbol
Loviatar – Nine-tailed barbed scourge
Malar – A brown-furred, bestial claw with long, curving talons tipped with fresh red blood
Mask – A red and black mask
Mielikki – A unicorn head holy symbol
Moradin – Hammer and anvil
Mystra – A star ringed river holy symbol
Oghma – A silver scroll suspended on a fine chain
Selune – Two darkly beautiful human female eyes surrounded by a circle of seven silver stars
Shar – An obsidian disk with an amethyst border
Sune – A beautiful woman’s head holy symbol
Talona – Three amber teardrops on a purple triangle
Talos – Three enameled bolts of lightning on a chain
Tempus – A blazing silver sword on a blood-red shield
Torm – An open handed gauntlet
Tymora – A silver coin holy symbol
Tyr – A balanced set of scales set upon the head of an upright war hammer
Umberlee – A forked blue-green wave holy symbol
Waukeen – A gold coin holy symbol with a woman’s head
Yondalla – Cornucopia painted on a wooden shield

I feel it would be more productive for the game if we didn't do this. You have to recognize that IC. A person even from a big city will only know the symbols of the churches in the areas of that city they live in. A rich person from Waterdeep will probably see Tyrran and Waukeenite symbols on a semifrequent basis and have been tutored inth symbols of a few others where their churches are important to his or her profession but someone from for example the backwaters of Amm may only know the holy symbol of their local temple, which could be anything from Mystra to Gond.

In short if you're curious about a symbol, ask the player wearing it. It's a good way to break the ice with allies and foes alike.

The game has a much higher church focus than is actually represented in the setting among adventurer populations so overtime, you'll get to know every symbol off heart.

Most deity help files list a loose description of the symbol though.

Right, but you have to know which deity to look up to see the symbol. The problem is you know the symbol but not the deity that it corresponds to.

I agree that asking about a symbol can make for good interaction, but it's not always the time or place, and other times it would just be nice to have as a refresher

Try asking that person IC? It opens up a conversation to be had IC and creates more RP.

help crescent moon returns corellon
help gold nugget returns garl
help tiny gear returns gond
help bound hands returns ilmater

The ones who do not have any sort of linking to their helpfiles:
Callarduran
Tyr
Chauntea
Oghma
Mystra
Selune
Gruumsh
Waukeen
Lathander
Sune
Torm
Shar
Malar
Umberlee
Loviatar
Talona

Admitting it would be nice if they could be brought up to date, just because if you're RPing a character who would know these things, a quick reference would be nice. Although I tend to use Google if I'm going that route.

Updating the rest of the deity files to match would be nice!

There is a book IG that lists all of the deities along with symbols and information.
