[ROLEPLAY] Ardeep and six-fingered demons

by Raona
There are many new developments in the Ardeep/Demon roleplay, that I am working to disseminate information on IC. (I will also add such information to the Kingdom's Journal as soon as I have time to write it up.) However, for those who were present and are eager to move on to the next step, I ask patience. I am coordinating with several rangers to lead smaller groups (5-6 PC's) to the place we were told of, and will inform everyone here of the times and departure points for these expeditions as soon as I can.

In the meantime, rangers are urged to scout out the location of the gnome warren that Felgolos spoke of. Anyone with existing mining skills is encouraged to get cracking on one of the five metals mentioned, as we will need a LOT of metal.

Anyone interested, even if not previously involved in the Ardeep/Demon RP, will be able to get involved in the next stage of this RP, so please don't exclude yourself because your PC has not been previously involved. Mages interested in cleansing the Old School or learning more about summoning (and banishing), friends of Ardeep, enemies of the forest, tieflings who love and hate demons, and evils who like to get in the way of all things good are all invited to take part, and we will try to make the timing open to all.

Note, however, that the RP will eventually tighten down again to a group of "involved" PC's...so this is your chance to get involved, and to demonstrate your ability to "play nice" in a large RP group! Understand that large group RP's move slowly, and require patience, careful note-taking, dedication, and a memory of past events. You'll also find yourself listening and waiting more than anything else. If that's not your style, stick to questing, where you can self-pace!

Can we keep the discussion on this thread perhaps? And preferably the coordinating here as well...not over IM.

Thanks.

How to get involved

I am still working on a complete summary of the events that set the stage for the cleansing of Ardeep, but I will post a partial summary here so that people can organize to explore the gnome warrens without waiting for me to finish the complete summary. Here's what to do if you would like to be involved in this RP at this point:
  1. 1) Read the subsequent post, which summarizes the relevant background information
    2) Decide if you want to take part, keeping in mind that large group RP requires more patience, flexibility, and toleration of others than does adventuring alone or with a hand-picked group of friends. If you can't handle that, please stick to questing, for everyone's sake.
    3) If you would like to lead a group to the gnome warren, scout out the location of the warren first, IC. Then post a reply here, announcing:
    1. a) Who you are (e.g. "Raona Corbin, squire of Tyr")
      b) What restrictions (if any) you have on party members (e.g. "No evils please", or "elf compatibles only [no drow, orcs, goblins, or...whatever elfies don't like, I don't know]" or "Open to all willing to cooperate in this effort")
      c) When your expedition will gather, OOC. (Please use a page generated from http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedform.html to clearly specify the time and date)
      d) Where your expedition will gather, IC (e.g. The Wagging Tongue Tavern in Tantras)
      e) Whether your group would be open to extended interaction with other PC's, for example evils keen to get in the way...basically your policy on the uninvited ("Late arrivals welcome, but please keep focus on gnome quest" or "Keen to RP with any evils that we might bump into")
Understand that leading a group is a responsibility, and one that should not be taken lightly. You should not leave party members behind in the warrens, and should ensure that the group awaits or helps those who grow tired, are hurt, etc. Don't volunteer to lead a group if you aren't willing to take on the responsibilities that go with the honour of doing so.
    4) If you would like to be a non-leading member of a party, look through the leader replies, pick one that works with your RP and schedule (make sure you can stay on for 3 RL hours after the gathering time), and reply by PM (private message) to the leader. Specify your PC's name, class, and an area or enemy in the game that your PC finds challenging, but not deadly, alone. (Raona, warroir/squire, can survive about 2 hill giants.)
Leaders should PM back to their party members 24 real-life hours before planned departure, telling them whether the party will actually go. They should also edit their announcement, confirming that it is a go, or specifying that it has been cancelled. Based on scouting reports from previous groups, and the words of Felgolos himself, it would be unwise for a party to proceed without:
  • A) Someone good at finding and disarming traps (and lots of them)
    B) Substantial healing power, at least one "cleric equivalent" worth
    C) At least one powerful player (level 45+?), who need not be the leader
If you see a problem with this approach to making the RP open to all, please PM me...and happy training and mining!

Background on Gnome Warren RP

Posted: Thu Aug 24, 2006 3:54 am
by Raona
I will post a more complete summary of the events involving the Arcane, and Felgolos, in the Kingdom's Journal, as soon as I can find time to finish it. However, for the time being, here is a summary of the background relevant to the gnome warren RP:

The would-be saviours of Ardeep were somewhat disheartened by the turn of events involving the Arcane, but just as they were putting their minds to what action to pursue next, word came that something was afoot in Ardeep. The demons were yelling, and a bronze-skinned man was lying on the road outside Waterdeep, barely alive, covered with mud, roots, and earth. Over the course of a long discussion, that explained his condition and how he came to be there, the man was revealed to be one named Felgolos, a practitioner of the Art, and a lover of Ardeep. He was pained to see the forest so tortured, and thought on what could be done. He came up with a means of at least containing the demons, such that they could not escape, as a prelude to actually removing them. It would require the preparation of four large metallic vessels, bearing magical runes and filled with holy water. He suggested forming the vessels from an alloy of five metals, harking back to the alliances between halflings, elves, humans, gnomes, and dwarves that had protected the forest in the past. He also seemed to feel that the contributions of these metals should not come from only the dwarves themselves, but rather all these races, and others as well; the unity of purpose itself a force in opposition to the chaotic and self-serving ways of demons. Observing that it takes a long time to earn the trust of a dwarf, and that much metal would be needed, he told of another possible means of learning of the mining trade. He told a tale of a lost band of gnomes, which went as follows:
"The dwarves might help, for sure... but they tend not to share their skills with other races much. It takes a long time to gain a dwarf's trust... but there are others, who might share the secrets... When Phalorm fell, the alliance broke and those who had escaped the slaughter spread out. Amongst those was a community of gnome miners, who found refuge farther south, in the Troll Mountains. They... still live to this day. Or un-live, to be precise. As refugees from Ardeep, perhaps they would agree with sharing some of their skills with you. I have not visited them recently. They were attacked by kobolds... and their spirits remain, unable to find peace. That is why they are still there. If you do not wish to remain idle, perhaps you could learn some skills from them and help in the construction of the foci. Though... I must warn you... kobolds are not much in size, but they more than make up for it with their trapmaking skills. Do not venture there on your own."

The friends of Ardeep thus organized to search out this gnome warren, and to learn what they could of the mining trade from them, even as they sought to bring rest to the gnomes' tortured souls.

Note: It would make sense for someone (preferably not Raona, who is already exhausted and short of time, and knows nothing about mining!) to organize what five metals should be gathered, and which by what race, once more non-dwarven folk learn how to mine. If you know something of ore availability outside of Mithril Hall, put a little thought into it, discuss it IC with others, and then post your recommendation here, or better still, on the IC note board. I'm probably doing too much of this organizing OOC, but I just don't have time to manage it IC. Please do as much as possible and practical IC rather than OOC! (I know, do what I say not what I do...bad Raona.)

p.s. The evil community should take this as an invite to get involved as well, though I'm in no position to suggest how. Intelligent evils would certainly notice the sudden increase in (heavily-laden) traffic to the Troll Mountains and other mining locales, and might want to investigate/extort/steal/set up toll booths/play tricks on parties...who knows?

p.p.s. It would be really great if folks could send reports back "from the field" - what happened when your group tried to enter the gnome warren? Post them to the IC note board, and/or send them to applications@forgottenkingdoms.com for addition to the Kingdom's Journal. (Please note that journal@forgottenkingdoms.com won't work!)

Following the late events in Ardeep, it has been known that the
solution to contain the demon infestation lies in the crafting of
some huge metallic vessels filled of blessed water.
In the purpose of the crafting of those special vessels, we need
elves, humans, gnomes, dwarves and halflings to work hand to hand
in the mining of specific metals, and thus we need as many of us as
possible to learn on the mining skills.
For this purpose, we have heard of some gnomes spirits, inhabiting
the Troll Mountain, who could pass their mining knowledge to us.

We, Galdim Forgehammer and myself, Gaymor of Garl Glittergold, have
decided to gather a group of 5 or 6 adventurers to venture in those
mountains, help those gnomes to find their well deserved rest, and
learn their mining knowledge to help on the demons threat.

Galdim Forgehammer, Cleric o' te Soulforger, Son o' te Forgehammer
o' Adbar, old o' te Watch, old voices o' te Halls in te Deep an'
one o' te freeier o' te Halls.

Gaymor, Golden Priest of the Joker
For all interested, we would rather organise that either on saturday evening (7:00 pm GMT time) if alright for Imms / players availabilities.

The invitation is opened to all (though pointy ear may need Galdim agreement).

Gaymor

Edit : For now we are
- Galdim
- Gaymor
- Harroghty
- Paskry
- Ketlic
- Goz

One trap master missing ;)

Edit on Raona's advice :
we are open to having evils bump into us along the way (being delayed/sidelined by evil PCs) if it does not make our rp last indefinitely :)

edit :
addition note : alright for rp coming from encountered with evil PC, but not for PK

{INSERT from Moradin : I can nae see why any o' Corellon's lot be needin' special permission. If yer willin' ti travel wi a gnome I'm surprised ye'd draw th' line at any other}

{INSERT from Galdim : Tat be because ah nae trust te pointy ears as tey be cheatin me all te time afore wen ah had ta deal wit tem, tat be frem me personnal past}

C'mon, there's got to be a goodly or neutral thief out there willing to join this party, no?!?

Add Geden to that group. Gondites united!

Our situation right now, we have no trap remover... so that may be problematic.
We are already 6 to go, will be 7 with a trap remover, so adding Geden would be 8 and unfortunatly is getting far from the 5-6 initial limit. But if the imms have nothing against it, we're all ok for it.

Now, ICly I would dare going even without trap remover, bu tI don't know what's the imm view on that.

Searching for a rogue deseperatly.

Edit: Oh, and we will be meeting at outside Daggerfords gate.

Having found no rogue, our party will still try to go there at the given time, being able to detect the trap, we will try to see if we can avoid them or protect ourselve from them.

Has anyone logged the conversation with the Sembian Merchant??

I was attempting to keep a log, but then the dying happened and I couldn't. It would be greatly appreciated.

I want to state a few things about leading a group, since it seems to be necessary to remind some people about them. Raona has already mentionned some of them, but I'll add to the list.

1 - The roleplay is NOT the place to make your character look superior to others, or to make others feel how much they suck (in some sense or another). The roleplay is an opportunity for people to work as a GROUP and to contribute whatever they can to it. As a group leader, making sure that everybody has enough time and enough opportunities to act and shine is one of your duties. If you choose to lead a group just to show off or order people about and not let them comment and share ideas, then please just stay away from this roleplay.

2 - As a leader, you should NOT rush things and only go as fast as the slowest member of your group. If you are not prepared to do so, or if you think it's boring, then opt out of the roleplay. ALL members in the group should be given enough time to read the descriptions and see and understand what is going on. The goal is not to take people along just for the tough fights or to pick open a door, the goal is to let everyone know what is going on and be able to contribute knowingly to the events. This is especially true in a larger roleplay. If you are not ready to take the time to make sure that everybody knows and understands what is going on and why they are doing that, then opt out of leading a group.

3 - The goal of the roleplay is not the same as IC goal of the expedition/adventure. The goal of the roleplay is for all those who take part in it take have fun and to understand what is happening. The goal of the adventure is to get an object or explore a place or whatever else. The goal of the adventure should NEVER be considered as more important as the goal of the roleplay. If all you are interested in is getting the object or exploring the area or whatever, and if you don't mind about what other group members wants to see and do in the roleplay and whether or not they are having fun, then opt out of leading the group.

Basically, leading a group is acting to make sure that everything is going fine for OTHERS, and not a way to hog all the glory and boss people around.

I'd like to add some groups can have more than one leader. Different PCs can assume the role as needed during an adventure depending on the needs of the group at that particular time.

And my small addition...

You may be level 50, have GMd all your skills and have played the game for 1000 hours, but that does not mean that there is any more reason for you to be named leader over someone else.

I could add to that those players who 'know the game' or know an area, but I'd hope that nobody is sad enough to think they should be leader based upon something as OOC as that.

For that matter a leader could be low level and have few skills, leadership is a personality quality.
I think Dalvyn said it well.
A good leader looks out for those below them before themselves and tries to help those they lead to become the best they can by supporting and encouraging them. Perhaps pointing out strengths they didn't know they had.
A great example is the Captain is always the last to leave the ship making sure everyone else gets off safely in a time of crisis. Hence the term "The captain goes down with the ship"

A wise leader also listens to those they lead and genuinely take into consideration their thoughts, idea's and feelings.

Need a group

I am seeking a group of good aligned players to travel with me to the Troll Mountains. Realizing that most all who are involved have already been, I believe, I am seeking ones that have not as of yet went. If you have went already and wish to help me form a group and return, please have a good reason IC for wanting to return, and if the group is moving slowly, don't try to push us forward because you know the way.

If you are interested in joining me, please send me an email at rhyeinbuilder@hotmail.com with the subject set to Ardeep RP, or something along those lines, so I don't junk it, and please list what times you can be available to do this over the next week which is Sunday, 3rd of Sept. - Saturday, 9th of Sept.

The people who sent me a PM, please contact Valdimyr as well. I think we will combine efforts, as neither of us have a fulll group yet, and I'd like to catch anyone left out so far.

Last Chance?

I have to say I'm a little bit sad that so few folks stepped forward to lead groups to the warrens, at least in a pre-planned manner. I was hoping that all those folks who say they are left out of RP's would step up to the plate! Well, some did, and my thanks to them for doing so.

I've been too busy OOC to do much beyond dealing with Raona's day-to-day obligations. (Watch work never ends...I don't suppose there's any point in hoping that people just behave themselves for a week? :D) That is, until now, in that I think I'll actually have a few hours to play this weekend. Soooo...for any who are still keen to get in on this RP, now is probably your last chance! Join in or keep mum when the RP continues on without you!

Following my own instructions from above:

a) I am Raona Corbin, a squire of Tyr dedicated to freeing Ardeep from its demonic shackles.
b) I am organizing (not necessarily leading) a group of non-evil (good and neutral, all stripes) volunteers (dedicated to the same goal of freeing Ardeep) in a trip to these gnome warrens we've heard rumours about. The group I am organizing is open to all willing to cooperate in this effort, without prejudice. That means if you can't check your racial issues at the door, please don't show up. I'm not up for yet another three-hour RP about how much elves hate orcs and the like. Anyone free of the taint of evil is equally welcome on this expedition, and if you need to be exclusionary, this won't be the group for you. The group will also move slowly and stick together, so anyone who's in a rush or needs to run off on their own will also find this a very bad fit. We won't go save you if you keep running off.
c) This expedition will gather at http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/f ... c=0&p1=159
Expect that the RP will run at least 3 RL hours, more likely 4-5.
d) The expedition will gather at the south end of the Moonbridge in Silverymoon
e) The group will head straight for the Warrens, and would prefer to not be molested by anyone along the way. Reports from other groups suggest that the warrens themselves offer plenty of challenge and require plenty of time, simply of their own accord. Late arrivals for the party would be welcome, but please keep the focus on the gnome quest; don't distract us and eat up time.

If you would like to join this group, please reply by PM (private message) to me (Raona). Specify your PC's name, class, and an area or enemy in the game that your PC finds challenging, but not deadly, alone. (For example: Raona, warroir/squire, can survive about 2 hill giants.)

Based on interest expressed to this point, this effort is a GO! Expected to take part so far: Raona, Caelnai, Goz, Aldren, Braeck, Alyzlin, and Ryldaen.

Based on scouting reports from previous groups, and the words of Felgolos himself, it would be unwise for a party to proceed without:

A) Someone good at finding and disarming traps (and lots of them)
B) Substantial healing power, at least one "cleric equivalent" worth
C) At least one powerful player (level 45+?), who need not be the leader
D) A capable magic user, with sufficient skills to help most of the party fly or float or levitate

I think we now have all these bases covered, but we would love to have others join us. (Backups of A, B, and D are particularly welcome.) Remember, race is not an issue - if you can get into Silverymoon, it's all good. But please do PM me if you plan to come.

p.s. C'mon, where are all the druids? I can understand a dearth of theives stepping up to free a forest, but druids and rangers should be crawling out of the woodwork (er, sorry, bad pun) for this! (Then again, maybe they have, and have simply organized on their own and not told Raona about it...)

We are all organizing the resistance from within the Demon zone. Insugency Operations/Guerrilla Warfare style.

You're dang right I do! (Ok, though Raona may or may not...)

Seriously though, just to confirm (and bump!) the edited post above: The group for http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/f ... c=0&p1=159 is a go. Slated to join in so far are Goz, Caelnai, Aldren, Alyzlin, Braeck, Ryldaen, and Raona. That's plenty of fighterpower, a rogue, a cleric-worth, and a conjurer. So we have all the bases covered, but would love to have others join us, particularly other theives, mages, and healers. If you want to join in, whatever your talents, by all means PM me and let me know! Remember, race is not an issue - if you can get into Silverymoon, it's all good.

p.s. I decided the likelihood of any evils being on 12 hours before the appointed time is near nil, as usually only 1-2 players are ever on then...so Raona won't be scouting out the warrens then. Instead, her player will be sleeping and/or grading papers and/or updating these messages!
