The War Wizards are an integral part of Cormyr's army and have been an
important part of Cormyrean society from the country's founding. As a
result, mages are seen not as freaks in Cormyr, but as skilled craftsmen
whose medium is magical energy. The current royal magician Vangerdahast is
also the Chairman Emeritus of the College of War Wizards. His subaltern,
Laspeera, serves in his absences.
Baerauble Etharr ("Baerauble the Venerable") became Cormyr's first High
Wizard when he was appointed by Gantharla Obarskyr, Queen of Cormyr, in 245
DR, but was serving as advisor to the crown since Cormyr's first king,
Faerlthann Obarskyr. Baerauble and his successors Amedahast and Vangerdahast
are most responsible for the College of War Wizards' success and influence.
The War Wizards maintain an extensive network of magical and mundane
informants that attempt to monitor all mages in the Forest Kingdom. It is
not uncommon for Vangerdahast to personally visit powerful mages in Cormyr.
