When determining material of an object the game draws on your unmodified int score(needs either 15 or 16 it seems). I'd suggest removing this intelligence requirement or perhaps adjusting it to be lower/take from the modified score. The average person can discern the difference between iron, silver, steel, wood, etc. etc. and 15 int is well above average. Another possible adjustment would be to make the material show up when 'appraise'ing the item. This would restrict it to items that your character might be trained to recognize differences in.

I've just been advised that the requirement is 16 int and 12 wis. Also, after giving more thought, I think having 'appraise' offer more information on an item could be a good route. High int/wis serves to identify those aspects of a number of things, but appraise is rather trade-specific.

I think reducing the requirement by two on the primary stat makes sense, maybe a bit lower. The secondary required stat, in my opinion, should stay where it is though. Checking the modified stat, rather than base, also sounds good.
