"weigh" command

Post by Tamryn » Wed May 15, 2013 5:02 am

For those of us sensitive to carry weight / max dex, it would be nice to have a command to weigh an object:
> weigh sword
An onyx-encrusted white steel bastard sword weighs about 10lb.
(Or maybe item weight could be shown in "examine"?)

Characters with high wisdom or intelligence stats can determine the weight and materials of most objects. I could still see weighing things as a possibility though maybe by taking an item to an appropriate mob that would weigh things or with a scale-like item you could purchase.
Justice is not neccesarily honourable, it is a tolerable business, in essence you tolerate honour until it impedes justice, then you do what is right.

Spelling is not necessarily correct :)

It currently takes 15 int to determine weight and matierals when you examine an item which really shouldn't be the case. (another instance of a stat requirement leftover from days when character creation was very different) Most people can make a close guess to weight of something when they hold it. To have it based on a very high intelligence or wisdom is kind of silly. Removing the stat requirement would be more realistic and let everyone see weight and materials of items. Seeing that something is leather, metal, iron, steel, hide, or whatever is not exactly a science and theres no need for weights or matierals to be hidden anyway.

Hm, I didn't know that. I don't know the history behind it, but it certainly seems reasonable to remove the requirement, for materials at the very least. (Given that int 10 is an average human, and I think most of us can recognise leather, bronze, etc. IRL, as you say.)

It's also possible to "weigh" an item at the moment by dropping it and checking the difference in carry weight, although I tend to avoid doing that as it seems a bit like... well, not code abuse, but a bit iffy.

I don't think the requirement should be removed. It makes sense to have it, but maybe make common materials recognizable with lower int/wis scores.
