Adjective change in the initial area.

Post by Vibius » Tue May 21, 2013 7:15 am

Hi,

I don't know if this is really issue but I thought that it might be an interesting idea that characters would be able to change their adjective while they are still in the initial area. Since I presume that it would require some hardcode code involving the adjective command, perhaps it could be bypassed with an item that would be stationary in one room of the initial area.

It would be a mirror, when you look it, it forces looking at you (the PC), also it would have a command perhaps called adjectivechange, if you type it followed by your new adjective, your adjective would be changed.

Well, you already have a *long* time to consider an appropriate adjective for your character - any time up to level 25, and the help file makes it fairly clear that it can't be changed later (although admin can reset it if you do something obviously stupid - I don't know what the policy is on that in general). Do people often set an adjective then want to change it?

I think levels 1-25 is plenty of time to decide. If the mirror was stationed inside an initial training area, level 10+ PCs would be unable to use it... so it would actually reduce the window you have to change adjectives from levels 1-25 to levels 1-10.

It might be useful to have one re-do for Adjectives up to level 25. It would save having to bug an Imm if you accidently miss-spell something!

What about allowing us to change as often as we'd like up until a certain point? Like say after that first dungeon... or level 5 or something. Then it operates as normal, we have until lvl 25 to set it. If we've changed it once in that first 5 lvls then it's locked in after lvl 5.

Hm. Good idea, I think.

I would even go as far as leaving it open until level 10. Just like giving up access to the starter temples.

Maybe a limit on how many times to save from abuse? IE: You get three hits from levels 1-25 then you must apply per usual.

(Abuse seems like a small thing, but it would be very easy for a new player to spam change their adj while making crimes etc in WD not realizing poor form to change adj and avoid the rp of it etc.)

is there a way to track the crime to the character and not the adjective? Have it change with the remade adjective?

Track the crime to the character's VNUM?

Would that change how disguise works?

Ooo! Good point, the VNUM would see through the disguise.

I am not sure that this is a big risk.

Sorry - I didn't mean the crime board literally, I meant roleplay wise. :)

The logic in not letting people change their adjective willy-nilly is (I think) that people you don't greet will get to know you by adjective, and changing it will essentially transmorgrify you to them. The hard-code rule was put in place to prevent wholesale changes, not typo corrections, but the code can't readily differentiate between the two and allow one but not the other. I don't think the issue is people wanting to wait until after level 25 to change their adjective, but rather that people wish to change it more than once - usually because of a typo.

The 'magic mirror' option makes sense if most often the multiple adjective changes PCs wish to make arise before level 10. Is that the case?

With more work than it is probably worth, hard code could be written that attempts to take into account how much of a change is being sought, and allow minor changes (typo corrections) while disallowing larger changes without Imm help. Short of that, I think it best to leave things as is unless the Imms feel they spend a lot of time dealing with this. (Folks upstairs, email me if you feel this way! I'm guessing it is not a big deal: that you spend far more time dealing with lost pets and "broken" quests...)

I like the mirror option a lot, tbh. I've made a few toons with adjectives I didn't like after a short time (usually I try to portray the feel of them in the most succinct way, and they might develop out of what I initially chose even in the starting area). Having it in a salon or in the emporiums (wizards in ZK, men and women's in WD) would allow access up to 25, but it could be a QBIT tracked thing--"you've already done this once" or twice, or whatever.
Jamais arriere.
