Counter-disarms?

Post by Grenwyn » Wed Aug 14, 2013 4:29 pm

My fighter seems to execute counter-disarms when an NPC tries to disarm him, while my thief does not.

Is this a feature of the fighter class, a virtue of having greater strength, or something else? I am unable to find documentation on this in the helpfiles.

I believe it's improved disarm, but can't say for sure. There's a thread on it somewhere in Game Suggestions, probably a few pages back.

My fighter doesn't have improved disarm or grip trained.

I haven't tested this, but I think it's based on relative attack/to-hit bonus, so your fighter is possibly succeeding just by virtue of having a higher hit bonus than your thief.

Does it show if the attempt fails? If the failed counter attempt is hidden, then Enig's hypothesis is likely spot on.

Edited to Include -- Or if the attempt doesn't happen at all because of lower attack bonus... yeah. Enig's probably right. Not sure that -should- be the case if it's the second thing.

Could you please provide the echoes that you see on your fighter when they counter-disarm? I want to make sure I'm looking at, and we are talking about, the same thing. Thanks!

Code: Select all

You attack a pirate as he opens his guard to disarm you.
You disarm a pirate as he opens his guard to disarm you.
You disarm a pirate!

Ah, yes. Disarm works pretty much as indicated here:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/specialAttacks.htm

There is no echo for a failed counter-disarm attempt. Most likely your fighter has a better weapon for disarming and/or a higher skill in it, and so succeeds where your thief tries but fails (and you see no echo for that).

Hope that clears it up!

My fighter typically uses a two-handed weapon, so that explains it. :) Thanks!
