Item Weight - 61 Lb shield

Post by Liandria » Fri Dec 13, 2013 12:10 pm

Looking through the items for sale in Irondeep, I was looking at the tower shield and wondering how much of a difference it would make to my AC. Then I noticed its weight. 61 lbs, the Dwarven Platemail sold by the same vendor only weighs 14 lbs. 61 lbs seems awful heavy.

Location: Storeroom in Irondeep
Merchant: A dwarven storekeeper
Item: a mithril-studded steel tower shield

Storeroom
W-Sleeping quarte
Picks of all sizes and made of various material hang on the carved walls
of this small storeroom. A half-finished armour lies in the corner, next
to a badly damaged dwarven battleaxe. Three empty mugs have been discarded
on the long stone table that stands in the center of the room.
A dwarven storekeeper is repairing some picks here.

This is true of every mundane tower shield. I checked the d20 SRD and it states that a tower shield should be 45 pounds. In reality, a tower shield is probably more like 20-30 lbs (e.g. a Roman scutum), but if I had a dollar for every time that a weight or characteristic in a role-playing game was unrealistic...

I recommend that we conform the weights to SRD, and a brief survey of game objects suggests that tower shields are the only ones out of line.

    Shield, light steel 6 lb.
