You can still hear footsteps during sleep. not sure if this was intended or just a mishap or was designed for how much Wis / listen skill you had or something.
If it was an oversight perhaps it could be just another advantage of being elven that you only fall into trance.

I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!

I was not able to reproduce this with a human PC.
