Combat question
Sometimes during combat I will see this:
As you wince from the pain of the last attack, a mustard jelly takes the opportunity to strike!
I can't recall for sure whether this allows another attack or not but I think it may do and I was wondering what this represents in dnd since seemingly this is during normal combat. I could use some clarification as of right now I'm assuming it's something only certain mobs have though it is more widespread than one would think since I've seen it here and there.
Conversely sometimes I will see something like:
You attack a helmed horror as he opens his guard.
But he cast no spell or did no action that I can see provoked it and I will definitely get the extra AOO attack.

I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
Re: Combat question
I think it is the opportunist feat.

Re: Combat question
I thought so, but I was soloing at the time and I have no rogues / thieves.
Plus... You always call thieves the slime of the earth but I didn't want to take that too literally

Re: Combat question
Yeah, the opportunist feat had by the jelly, not by your character.

Re: Combat question
Possible if funny to consider. Any clue about the second thing?

Re: Combat question
I saw the second when mobs try to bash me or use some other combat skills.
Re: Combat question
Mobiles can have feats and sometimes they are built without the "improved" feats which would prevent you from getting a free opportunity attack.Yemin wrote:Possible if funny to consider. Any clue about the second thing?
Without the ability to /stat the mobile I can't tell what actions they might be performing but it's possibly they are doing an action that is being interrupted and thus there's no /recho back to you or the room. You could maybe guess by knowing what they do when you don't manage to interrupt them.

Re: Combat question
I've seen something similar upon bash, but I always see the bash attempt if they don't have improved bash.
i see the second message a lot on the ghost priests in a certain area and I can never figure out what their trying to do.

Re: Combat question
If the helmed horror was unarmed you would have gotten the opportunity to strike every time it attacked if it did not have the improved brawling feat.

Nada, it was very much armed.

Re: Combat question
After paying attention for a lot of the creature's I've noticed doing this
I still can't really figure out what they're trying to do. They do nothing when I hit them and nothing when I miss them. It isn't a rogue attack far as I can tell because I have never seen a PC rogue evoke anything close to this echo when an NPC attacks them.
It isn't a combat maneuver like disarm or bash because those always show the attempt regardless of feats.
And the attack because of unarmed echoes something quite different.
To my point, I wouldn't mention this as seemingly it does not do harm. But I've come to realize, like offensive casting on spellcaster NPCs that this is significantly lowering the challenge rating of these creatures. I seemingly get anywhere from 2 to 5 free rounds of just hitting them.
Code: Select all
You attack a bla bla statue as he opens his guard.
