Nightmare

Post by Llanthyr » Mon Jan 10, 2005 3:05 am

Nightmare:
Illusion spell [Darkness domain]
Mind-affecting/evil
Casting time 10mins, unlimited range, one target
Will negates

Nightmare: Sends a hideous unsettling phantasmal vision to one specific creature you nominate. Prevents resetful sleep and causes 1d10 damage. Subject is fatigued and unable to regain spells for 24hours

Would be an interesting spell for clerics with the darkness domain (of shar, mask)

Functions of spell in FK:
- Deals some damage to target
- No unlimited range, but able to cast at range (1 room away in sight)
- Quicker casting time than stated for use in combat
- Fatigues recepient
- Cannot meditate while spell is in place
- Minimal stamina recovery
- Save VS using Mind resist
- Works as poison currently works, decreases mental instead of strength
- Prevents regenerative sleep
- If target falls asleep due to fatigue, nightmare deals damage each tick
- Removable by a Restoration spell

Just throwing out random ideas, please comment.

What about adding forced sleep state or stun to that list? Some potent nightmares enthrall you into an state of deeper doom while others send you reeling into the waking world full of fear and the shakies.

I personally like the spell, a fun 'trippy' spell, trippy referring to the mind-twisting effects it induces. I'm curious, actually as to how many of the effects that nightmare would entail are automatic when one is under mental fatigue. There is, of course, the insano-echoes, but what else does having your mental strength depleted do to a PC that is automatic and does not need to be RPed out?

I had my mental decreased to a fairly low at one point, and I just kept falling asleep. There's always the interesting hallucinations. I'm not sure what else mental state exactly does, actually.

I like the idea, but would sleep no longer heal now? If so I could see how this spell could seriously mess the game up in some instances, although I admit this MUD is a lot more rule-abiding to the indivisual player than any other I've seen.
