Complex plot: OOC Courtesy vs IC information

Post by Lerytha » Sat Feb 19, 2005 5:08 pm

Hello. Recently, one of my characters has, with the aid of others, begun a rather complex little plot. I hope this will provide a lot of fun for everyone I RP with. 'Nuff said about THAT.

Now... when it comes to my RP, it is highly possible I am tricking the players OOC, giving them no chance to enjoy the depth of the RP. What I have already done, is told the two main "targets" the details of the plot, OOC. I intend to tell the final target when I next see it.

My question is: would people expect me to tell them OOC, providing they do not react ICly when there is no evidence? Or do I keep the information IC only... and leave it at that?

Apologies if I have broken a rule through informing people about my intentions. I just realised today I might have done, and decided to ask about it here, so others can know what to do if they are in the same situation.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
If you have knowledge, let others light their candles with it.

Better to keep things IC and let the RP unfold as it will. Knowing stuff OOC can influence how people react.

I didn't really follow any of that. My suggestion in any case like this is to make as much as absolutely possible IC. That makes the game fun. Use OOC only for things like agreeing on a time to meet in game, etc: Things that have to be done between the real people. If it takes place between characters, it should be done IC.

Just an opinion to toss out here. Planning plot ooc that could really hurt people ic is kind of erf, imo. You've got three players going "Ok. This is how it is going to be." But what about number four you forgot to think about, that is going to be affected poorly IC because of ooc plotting.

I see it like plotting something ooc writes a script. You can't write a script without all the players, it's kind of an unfair situation. Juicy things are best left without ooc plotting to give everyone involved IC a fair chance. Instead of people feeling "That's not fair! They planned that an now my bard is blah!"

(I'm speaking on the topic in general, not the singular situation in referal.)

I guess it depends on how much you're plotting. If part two of your plot depends on someone else's character making a certain decision, then I certainly wouldn't tell them because that will definitely influence that decision.

Sometimes when I RP on an instant messenger, we pretty much run the RP twice, once with everyone semi-IC plotting, and then once with everyone fully IC properly playing it out. On the other hand, in tabletop, I don't like to give as much away, just a general hint: this time you'll be looking for someone; this time you'll be trying to get out of a tricky situation.

Nothing wrong with having a juicy plan, but you'll find that a character will make a decision you didn't expect at some point along the line, and then you'll have more fun too because none of you know what's going to happen next. Any sharing of your plot beyond the essentials is definitely going to make characters more likely to act in a certain way.

Something I may be reading into this but let me see if I understand it correctly.

I know that there are some rp's that may involve other characters that you may need to get permission to involve them. You may not discuss all the details and leave that up to rp but to give basic information so that you can get the permission to actually exicute the rp.

If this is what the OOC discussion is for I do not really see a problem with it. As I myself have been involved in this type of RP situation. I had someone OOCly ask permission to involve me in such and such rp before it actually began. That is normally the polite thing to do especially if it is something that could hurt someone.

Just my two cents
