How do you get into the roleplay scene on FK?

Post by Septa » Thu Aug 25, 2005 12:17 am

It's been close to two years since I visited this site/logged into the game.. Admittedly I left because, as much fun as this game was, I was too new to roleplay to fully understand/appreciate the experience. After spending some time in various other RP games and getting familiar with the meaning of "good roleplay" I figured I'd come back here and give it another go.

And I must say, the changes I have seen so far (the character creation especially) are absolutely astounding, a large step up from what they were. I found after running it I was considerably more aquainted with the game mechanics than I had been in the tutorial that I remember from a couple years ago. It's left me very anxious to get into the game and enjoy all there is to see.

I do have one question though, as FK still differs greatly from any RP I've been in before.. how does one get involved in the RP scene? In a community as developed as this, it's not always an easy task for someone new to meet new people, which has never been my strongest suit any way.. I'm just curious if there's anything I should know/be willing to look for or try beforehand?

Talk to people...ask them to take you places...My characters and many more will be more then happy to take a lower level player out to do stuff. That is the best way to get involved in RP just start talking to everyone you meet. It is not going to happen overnight, but you will begin to see your character really start to blossom rp wise and will start having many people to rp with. :)

Well, atleast that is how I started to get into rp. There are many others that are far better at rp then I. Hopefully they will throw in some advise :) :)

A grand thing is engaging in conversation with other people in a public place like a market square or tavern. Talking about their interests, past, present and future and your own can aid in integration to society. It will take time and patience but it will pay off in the end. It also helps to do a little traveling, slowly and carefully throughtout the kingdoms to get a feel of cities and various areas.

I would suggest making a character in your mind before you begin creating and playing him. Come up with a background, get a mental image of what your character looks like, and most importantly, find out how he acts/RPs and what his personality will be like. Being able to come straight out of the Temple knowing how you're going to play a character makes it exciting right away.

One thing I have noticed about the game is that there are "generations" of players, or at least I believe it to be so. It's great if you go around with higher level characters to become better aquainted with the world around you, but ultimately I believe you travel with characters of like level and "age". While all generations mingle and intertwine and create great RPs together, I find that the strongest bonds tend to form between these like-generation characters. Perhaps it's just me and my characters, but this has been my observation.

Well, my advice is don't be afraid to try and make friends, because chances are they are looking for a companion just as much as you are! :D

Lets see...RP is what you make it, talk with people, be a loner. Be a teen hearthrob or an ugly wizard, its all your RP and it is what you make it.

Hmm, well, for a difficult, but fun challenge, not just for you, but for everyone, really. Get your character's personality and description and stuff made when you make the character, but instead of deciding what you want him to be as soon as you make him, let your character discover for himself what he will become. Have an open-mind and talk with different faith's, classes, ect, and learn about them, RP with them and decide your character from there.

Its always fun to make a character right off the bat to be a priest of xxx, but if you develop your character slowly and let him grow on his own, you will find you learn alot more about your character and your own RPing style.

As to finding people to RP with, "hang-out" spots are usually nice, these can be the Market Square for cities, or the middle of a clearing for forests.

Eh, hope that helped.

Wow Argentia, what an observation. I had never noticed that, but after your post I started thinking about it and I think you've stumbled on to something. I love really thought provoking things like that.

The first character I created here, I ended up deleting. The second, Balek, is the character I've had the longest, but I wasn't initially very involved in any kind of RP with him. My second longest running character is a bard named Sanin. He was my first successful RP character. The way I got myself into the RP on this game was by creating a character who I decided would be talkative to the point of annoyance. In real life, I was not a talkative person or a person who could meet new people easily. I think you'll find, however, that when you're playing a character, it's pretty easy to let go of any kind of social anxiety you might have and just start talking to people. Over the years I've pretty much lost any kind of social anxiety I once had, I don't have a problem talking to new people, and that has had a positive effect on my roleplaying with other characters.

In short, my advice for getting into the RP scene...make an annoyingly talkative character who asks too many questions. You'll meet people and you'll get a much better feel for roleplaying here. Once you jump to a less social character you'll find that what you learned about roleplay and interaction transfers to the new character fairly easily.

I hope that helps, and I hope that somewhere in my rambling, incoherant response I came somewhere close to a rational thought.

Actually, these responses have been very helpful so far. There's a lot of good ideas here for me to think about so far, and I appreciate all your help. I really do love the community this game has put together, one of the most mature and interesting I've run into really.

Definately looking forward to getting involved in the RP with all of you :)

RP...Oh yah...Good Times

One thing being a newer player, but not at all new to the mudding world...Forgotten Kingdoms has awsome RP and the Imms do a great job at making this work, as well as the other players (Moreso the players) One thing I think is everyone on this mud is like a family...I have grown close to a lot of characters and got to know their players...People are so awsome and the characters they play are so intresting...I myself love to RP with people and get in as much as possible sometimes its not easy but I still try. So I would say welcome to the game again and I personally am glad to see more people coming in! :o

Like said above the market square is definately the best place in my opinion. It is slow there sometimes, but when I first started a couple months ago, it's where I started making all my friends and got into a bunch of awesome rps! My character Citorae is usually in the square, so if I havent met you yet, I hope to see you around!!!

When ever rp gets brought up I try to make it a point to point out a few things. First, be evil! Just kidding, but really Be evil. I say that in a joking serious tone. The game needs evils but we don't need no stinking evils. Know what I mean. We don't need people beging evil that can't cut it, can't play by the rules AND hold their own as a nemises to the goodie community. The reason this is so important is that if you are evil and are mearly an annoyance by starting up stuff but get all whiney when the goodie patroll surrounds you it only hurts the work of evils across the world.

Alright I could rant on that till the cows get back..... My second point is be flexible. Yeah its a great idea to know where you want your characters to go and be and become but if you let the character take a life of its own you will enjoy the game so much more I think. Honestly, when I am playing Kirkus the times I enjoy the most are when I have no idea wether or not he is going to be sane or crazy. Why oh why does he have that option? because of the events of his life.... I would explain more but I gotta jet.

So in case you couldn't read those huge paragraphs let me summarize....
Be flexabile. Let your character grow. Be evil but don't be a panzy whinny evil that gives us all a bad name.

Oh in case you don't know why it is so important to have lots and lots of evils............ You have to have more evils than goodies so hero's can emerge, look at any sci fi book you have ever read, the worlds are teaming with evil and its the good guys that are out numbered. That is what makes them hero's, going against those terrible odds.
I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.
