Note that those who wish to follow a deity, especially priests should have at least a basic knowledge of who the deity is, what (s)he stands for, the ethos, and so on. We don't ask every player to be knowledgeable about all things related to the Forgotten Realms, but they should at least have inquired about those things from other characters ICly.
The level of knowledge you would get by simply talking ICly with other characters in game is sufficient for non-priests. For priests, more is required. Those who wish to roleplay following a deity as a priests should at least read some about their chosen deity on the web, in the help files of the game, and from the resources cited in the Deity & Faith forum.
