Non-Bards and Musical Instruments

I'm not positive this is the right place, but it seems as good a place as any.

Is it acceptable/possible to have a character who is not a bard, but is still able to play an instrument, without any magical effects that bards might get? As long as I can buy a flute or the like, and smote playing it, I'd be happy with that.

I'm sure you can do exactly that.
Meaning buying an instrument, and smote playing it.

Cool beans. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be seen as stealing the Bards' thunder or something, or that I didn't need to have a coded skill to do it.

There was a post about this before, lost somewhere in the old board. Mystra said only bards will get the ability 'play'. But you can roleplay your ability to use an instrument.
